OT: January Snow Record
My first winter in Toledo was the 93/94 winter where we had a week straight of below zero temps. One day had a low of -22.

Not to rub it in, but I moved back to South Florida in 1998. This has been an unseasonably warm winter for us (86 yesterday). From what I've read it has been the exact opposite for Toledo.

I caught a snippet that said January 2014 had just a smidgen under 40 inches of snowfall recorded for Toledo, a new record.

Just curious, has this winter been the worst since 94?

Definately the most snow on the ground since I moved back to Toledo in 1998. We had a lot of snow just before Christmas, then that melted. Then much more snow that has remained on the ground continuously since January 1st. Quite a few below zero days and I think that it has continuously remained below 32 degrees for the last few weeks as well. It will be a mess when all of this snow starts melting with the warm up that is supposed to be coming next week.

End of next week is supposed to be in 40s and 50s. So get ready for some flooding unfortunately.

RE: OT: January Snow Record
January was the most snowfall for any one month ever in Toledo.
Right now Toledo is only 6 inches away for a record winter snowfall total.
Toledo is currently at the 3rd, with about 4 weeks of winter left......

January was the snowiest month in Toledo history since they started keeping track in the 1800's. January also had the most days ever of -10 or lower (six). Toledo is close to having the most snow ever for a winter. BTW, it was -15 at my house last night.

The Maumee is covered wit thick ice and over a foot of snow on the ground. A quick thaw will cause ice blocks and, I fear, bad flooding that may affect the houses in the next block. I welcome the warmth but dread the river's rise.

I remember when I was a kid my mother would take us to the Maumee-Perrysburg bridge in early Spring to see the ice break-up on the river. There would be huge sheets of ice, several inches thick, stacked all on top of each other as the ice broke up and started to move down the river. Quite a sight to see. In more recent decades there hasn't been so much of that. I wonder if there will be this year.

Like Pat said, we had a LOT of snow, then it rained and melted it. Then we got a whole bunch more snow. Just imagine if that hadn't been rain, but snow! 04-jawdrop Even now, I have a pile (of snow) about 5' high at the end of my driveway. But, I try to push most of it across the street into the cul-de-sac island. There I have a pile about 6' high! And all that doesn't include what I have piled along the driveway. If we get much more I don't know what I'm going to do with it!

I'm told that my house flooded in 1902 (at the age of 24). This was three years before I moved there. The old Waterville bridge lent itself to creating ice jams, forcing water westward into town. New bridges there and in Maumee help, although there were enormous ice jams two weeks ago at Side Cut. I was gone for ten days and they disappeared.

Well, my family has been blessed with great genes, but it was the house that was 24 years old in '02. I was only 19 at the time. No, I'm not really that old but Ranger was going to make the age comment if I didn't so.......03-wink
