The discussion that has followed this incident has been interesting, if somewhat predictable.

Everyone is weighing in on whether or not adequate secondary punishment has been applied for this arrest (mostly saying that one game is not enough, but not laying out precisely what would be the appropriate punishment, and why). The closest we’ve come to an objective analysis is an awkward use of transitive logic, citing penalties for other (often totally different) transgressions by other individuals on other teams in other locales, at times even in other sports, as some sort of bar-setting precedent. Emotion and team loyalty seem to be fueling these stances more than anything else. Those who actually decide on these matters, whether in the courts, on coaching staffs, or managing businesses, presumably are able to be guided by objectivity rather than emotion.

To me, the issue boils down to one question: what is the purpose of the punishment to be applied? Is it to make society (or a victim) whole for the damages of the offense? Is it to deter? If so, is it to deter the offender, his teammates, other college athletes, or members of society at large?

I, too, was surprised that the suspension was only one game. However, if I were asked to objectively and effectively decide on an appropriate length, I would need much more insight into the character of Justin Drummond (and to a lesser degree, his teammates, who will be affected by the decision) than I currently have. For the same reason a court needs to hear from character witnesses, I would need a confident grasp of the character and makeup of the individuals involved. That is the reason I feel correct in deferring to Coach K here.

What many fans of other schools - especially those that accuse Rocket fans of “moral gymnastics" - fail to realize, is that any Rocket fan with a memory that goes back more than a few years is probably more sensitive than most to the question of overall team character, given what we’ve been through.

Hopefully, with this long-winded post, I have succeeded in not only beating this dead horse, but burying it where no one will find it.

There are still many old-school that seriously see no problem with getting into a car, drunk.

The discussion won't and shouldn't bury because as it continues, new realizations and thought processes are showing. That's the point of discussion, isn't it? Heck, I've copied and printed the thread. It is very enlightening on present morals.

I don't think it is "transitive" logic when bringing up how the exact same offense was handled by other Universities or bringing up that our University did not explain its reasoning.

My major point and others have made it also, this "controversy" is on the way it was handled. We are then left to discuss the penalty instead of the reasoning used to determine the penalty. It is legit to wonder the effect on the reputation of the University. This is a controversial topic.

The real issue here is the coach who made a bigger mistake and the administration that didnt correct it (preferably behind the scenes) compounding the situation.

The consequences of Drummonds actions could have been deadly. No minor incident. The punishmemnt should fit the mistake made, not the fact it wasnt worse. Next time it could be and could involve someone you know or love.

The decision for a single game suspension is absurb on its face. It is purely an attempt to minimize the potential damage to this seasons basketball team. This says volumes about the lack of character of the coach and the adminsitrators who refuse to step up.

Thank you, Mrs. Perimeterpost. Now you may go back to helping Mr. Perimeterpost spank his dead horse, monkey, or whatever it is the two of you like to spank around this time of the night.

My first post regarding this topic on this board.
A little sensitive are we? Topic too close to home? You're not a parent yet are you? Still a student at the U? Majoring or majored in general studies? Are you a Wal-mart Rocket?

So you too think less of the kid, his problems and are more into living vicariously through the success of an athletic team. I bet your mom is proud of you.

Wow. Off our meds are we? Whatever your problem is I'll bet it's hard to spell. And that goes for your sock puppet, too.

Today up in Ypsi, chants of 'alcoholic' and 'DUI' were directed at Drummond. I'm sure bgsuCKS will take advantage at this as well. Hope he can keep his composure.

RE: Justin Drummond Suspended
I think it is time to let it go and quit letting opponents feed off us. Go JD and the Rockets and let's move on.
