I was also playing Jr High Football. The coach saw it and began working with me. I was as wide as I was tall. Before the end of my 8th grade year, I was participating in HS Spring Training having my butt handed to me by starting seniors. That summer I busted my butt in the weight room and such. The coach had a list of young men that was able to participate and called these guys to come try out.. Told them when to report. Of course they showed up and began mocking me. One of the seniors said, don't worry you'll get your chance. They hung with it until Hell Day, which was the day we strapped on full pads and could go full speed.

He set up a drill called the gauntlet. He had me at the very end. Rule was simply, they had to take a hit from several people but run straight, and the very end they had to avoid getting tackled. When the first guy got to me I literally picked him up and drove him into the ground. The second guy got his head tore off. Then we played bull in the ring.. Guess who was the bull first.. I was and the coach called out all the starters to get me.. I held my own.. Then he called for me to get out.. He called the first guy in.. My number was called 3 outta 5 times. He quit. Coach told him to sit on the bench and don't leave. Second guy didn't get dealt with until we played a game called Oklahoma. Basically his version was you pick a partner, and one time he carries the ball and you tackle then you swap. You have 2 holes to pick from. Object is to cross a line for the point. Second guy was my partner. I broke his collarbone on the first round.

Coach got him and the other boy together and said.. We've talked to the principal and if you f*ck with him any from today on, all faculty will turn their heads when he unleashes, they like him more than you two sh*ts. Now get off my field and don't come back until you're man enough to play or wanna watch and pay.

That coach taught me a lot and believed in me. He passed away this past September. It was a hard goodbye for me, but in the end I'm proud to have known him.

Goot story. Alot of those kinds of drills are now disallowed in school football programs.

Our coach did that. It broke a lot of guys. But then again, it made some tougher. I went through it and lived to tell about it.

Kids don't need to be broken. That is what you do to animals.

Not really. People tend to mistreat their own. If you're gonna be bullied, it's probably going to be by someone your race.

But racism is a form of bullying so they get bullied by their own and by other races.

Something majority races rarely encounter.

Racism isn't a form of bullying. One can be racist without doing anything to another person. Could it be a factor? It certainly can. Is it as much of a factor as you say? Probably not.

Classism, size-ism, jack@ss-ism, and insecurity have a lot more to do with it.

No. Some kids (teenagers) were just afraid of being hit while others weren't or knew any pain they might endure would soon go away. So while "broken" might not have been the most appropriate word, fraidy cat or wuss might have been better. BTW, some of those kids were almost old enough to go into the military where they would have been broken.

We still use all of those. Not as intense or allowed to go as long as Coach Clarke or Kidd would do it, but we use them for challenge time. they figure out they aren't going to die and guess what? That litle light often goes off.

I told him to just haul off and let him have it. We would handle the consequences. Well, he did. Got suspended for 3 day. He was never, ever bullied again. I know that solution doesn't work in all cases, but it worked in his.

I was the smallest kid in my middle school and was bullied for it. I got the same advice from my mother. I hauld off on the guy and lost the fight but it was the last one we ever had.

See the thing is this. A kid being Bullied is not being attacked for being Gay, Fat, or liking my little pony. They are attacked because they are perceived as weak. Until we teach our kids to be strong this is going to get worse ad not low will change that.

I think the word broken is perfect for it. It doesn't have to be their spirit that's getting broken. What's being broken is their fear, insecurity, and their attitude, if necessary.

This year I volunteered my time to help coach a high school wrestling team. We had 2 girls on the team and the guys didn't respect them. That's an attitude that we had to quickly break.
