RE: Anybody else spending the night away from home due to the snow/ice?
There's more to the logistics of opening school than just having non-icy roads. Think of how many people's cars are still scattered around Birmingham, people just now getting home, etc. Plus, how productive are they going to be on a Friday after the past three days?

Very true. There are still cars sitting in the middle of the road around here. Not stuck, just abandoned. Those people could live an hour away from here. I had to retrieve a car today. It's a pain, even if your car is parked in a parking lot.

Yes, retrieving cars is (or was) still an issue late this afternoon. Mine had been primarily in the shade and there was still some spinning and effort to get going. We still had a false turn or two before we found smooth sailing. Still plenty of abandoned cars to be seen, some still blocking major traffic lanes. With freezing temps again tonite, I wonder what time would be prudent to leave for work tomorrow AM. Should be above freezing about 9AM Friday and from then on we should see the last of the icing problems. I think we are going to skip the game tonight. Hate to do it, but in view of the last 72 hrs, there's no place like home. There's no place like home. There's no place like home. Click, click, click.

My work did not open today. Took the wife to her PT appointment near the Summit. Many many cars still beside the road parked, and a number off in the woods or fence. I only hit one or two places in the shade that were still icy, but roads that were wet earlier will be icy tonight.

Another problem was that many had left their hazard lights flashing and found their battery dead this afternoon when they returned to get their car. Not a lot of folks with good "booster cables" around these days.

I was also stranded for a couple of days. Got there Tuesday morning and left Thursday afternoon. I work in inventory and once I found out the status/location of our orders, I was pretty much considered extra help. I knew I was going to have to stay regardless, since all roads in Hueytown were closed and two of our evening shift folks are from the Hueytown area. I ended up working a 17-hour shift. I tried to sleep on a short bench and ended up stepping on/breaking my glasses while tossing and turning.
Wednesday, I had to resort to wearing my prescription sunglasses around the hospital, as I'm nearly blind without glasses. I became very popular in my department, as I knew the location of a shower that most employees in the hospital didn't know about (only one person from our department had to wait on someone not from our department). Two of my co-workers made a 14-block (one-way) hike to Walgreens to pick up underwear, deodorant, toothbrushes, etc. Southeastern Freights went above and beyond the call of duty to get an order to us that was about to become emergent (they dug through their 18-wheeler and put the shipment on a pickup truck and drove to Birmingham from the Pinson/Tarrant area). Evening shift made it in Wednesday, so I only worked 12 hours. That night, I slept on an exam table in one of the clinics and got about 6-7 hours of sleep.
Thursday, my boss told me I could leave as soon as I got updates on our deliveries and placed our Friday order to fill up our shelves for the weekend, so I left about 1.5 hours early. I got home, checked my pipes (which had not been dripping) and everything was ok. I was even able to do a load of laundry before the basketball game. One of our deliveries came as I was walking to the basketball game, but I told them I'd deal with it this morning.
Today, we finally got all of our deliveries in, which ended up being about 9 pallets worth (we usually get about 3 per day). Never been so glad to see a week end.

Where are you, Matrix?
I was on the Southside, tried to drive home by taking 3rd Avenue West to BSH and Hiway 150, but 1st Avenue North between 13th and 14th Street proved to be very un-nerving. Brakes were useless. Spent the first night at UAB Hospital, couldn't get any sleep, place is pretty noisy for a hospital. Tried to leave the 2nd evening but the only open route at the time was I-65 South, and it was gridlocked big time at the Lakeshore exit on back. I got frustrated and headed back to the South Side, spent that night at the Student Media Building. Somewhat cold and drafty there, but at least it was quieter than that hospital.
