Because we made 3 consecutive Sweet 16s from 82-84.

But yes that was the first 64 team bracket.

But that was the problem last time. I wasn't looking for sweet 16s. I was looking for tourney runs of 2 wins or more, to meet the definition of the post I was questioning.

He talked about "deep runs" as a standard to measure Pastner, and defined it as S16 or deeper, in today's context. I was looking to see how many "deep runs of 2 or more wins we made, NOT how many S16s we had, that included one-win "runs" in the old days.

1982 and 1983 were one win S16s, 1984 was a 2 win S16. So I originally counted only 1984, along with our F4 run in 1985, as S16s, or better.

I also posted later that I never should have used S16s as the standard, due to different eras, and instead should have labeled them as "Seasons with 2 tourney wins, or more."

Hope that clears it up.

Any way you slice it, our history does not support holding Pastner to a standard of "a few deep runs" before people will lay off him.

Especially since the only two coaches who ever met that definition had either multiple tourney appearances or a full season vacated.

Good timing.

I get it- but think you are being too technical.

In 1982 for example Memphis EARNED the right to be a 2 seed and get essentially a bye into the round of 32. In that context making the Sweet 16 is making the Sweet 16 although indeed, they were not in position to be upset a round sooner. UCLA did not have to win 6 games every time they won a title- which means they won fewer tourney games, but were no less champions.

The general idea- that fans who think Memphis should perennially make runs deep into the tourney- are unrealistic based on even our last 30 years- is a good one.
