Claims to have the "best coaching staff in the country".

http://coachingsearch.com/article?a=Penn...n-practice

That can't be right...I thought we had the best in the nation?

He brought 7 assistants with him from vandy a place you can't win and proceeded to win 9 games 3 straight seasons. His defensive coaches all came from non bcs schools which will be interesting to see how that plays out in Happy Valley.

He turned a dismal program around immediately. None of this we need to tear it down to rebuild, cupboards are bare, and needing time to get his own recruits.

A good coach works with the talent he has and builds on it.

When Franklin states he has the best staff in the country, it's not hyperbole. There is some truth in the remark.

Like Fleck, Franklin placed a very heavy emphasis on recruiting. But you are right, he turned it around rather quickly.

A good coach works with the talent he has and builds on it.

If all good coaches were able to do that, no one would ever have a losing record, it'd be like Lake Wobegon where everyone is above average.

Even very good coaches get off to rocky starts, look at Jimmy Johnson 1-15 in year one (and that was with Troy Aikman)

Except not all coaches are good coaches. And after year 1 the jury is out on ours.

For every coach pointed out with a bad start, there are numerous examples of coaches who hit the ground with immediate improvement.

Shane Clipfell is only in year two and he has the ladies Bball team at 2nd in the MAC West, and tied for 3rd overall in the MAC. Still in the first half of the season, but he has been on an upward projectory since starting last season.

True, but in the case of WMU, both recent coaches who hit the ground running (GD and BC), both finished up by getting run into the ground. Its not how you start, but how you finish.

I'm confused, I thought we were talking about WMU? Ohio State? M? Lions? Who?

Fleck was 1-11 in year one. He can't coach. It's settled. 03-phew

I think it is pretty obvious which two coaches I was talking about.

not when you say the following: 'You'll notice I did not mention either one of those two."
I don't know who in the flip you're talking about.

RE: James Franklin channels PJ
James Franklin might well be a good coach but he gave one of the goofiest replies to a question that I've ever heard in a presser.

At 13:49 a reporter asks, "Have you given any thought to whether the names will be on the jerseys?"

His reply: "That's the first time I've heard that. That hasn't come up from anybody." smile. pause. "Um, yeah, we've had a lot of thought and discussion about that, uh..." and then goes on about respecting tradition etc. without answering the question. The truth popped out right away followed by the instinct to make it seem like he's in complete control and thought of everything. Not a big deal but a little embarrassing.
