RE: Promotion/Advertising for UMD Series
I heard on the news last night that Saturday night is the annual teddy bear toss. Other than that, I honestly didn't know that they were playing at home this weekend.

Your probably right that the marketing dept just assumes that since most of the tickets are sold they don't need to do much more to market the games, but that's just so short sighted. They should be doing everything in their power to promote the fact that our team is hot and this is a big weekend series. IMO, making a schools athletic programs seem as big as possible reflects greatly on the university as a whole. Look at MSU, UofM, ND etc. For the most part, we relate those schools to what we see on the football field or basketball court more than what we do their academics. If WMU ever really wants to step up into the consciousness of fans, future students, etc. they need to do so much more to market themselves beyond a few billboards and radio spots each week to promote upcoming games.

RE: Promotion/Advertising for UMD Series
Just caught a commercial on local tv during the local evening news that was actually a longer commercial with lots of game footage. First time I recall seeing a tv commercial for Bronco Hockey, so there is at least some promotion occurring.

RE: Promotion/Advertising for UMD Series
They've advertised the last two home series' on FSD, so someone's listening to our promotion talk it seems. BroncoFever is spot on with more suggestions, and they look both inexpensive and effective, so they'll get implemented I'm sure. Okay AD rep, go do it! Listen to BroncoFever! It's the sensible thing to do! Sincerely, Lunatic

There are so many things the Unversity could be doing, through student run/faculity
supervised projects. WMU does have pretty good Hawthorn College of Business which offers marketing, advertising/promotion and electronic business marketing degrees. Pretty sure there are a lot of students who would love to work on some "real life" projects

That would be great. What a project for a small group of students.

RE: Promotion/Advertising for UMD Series
I got a call from a ticket rep who wanted to sell me B-Ball tickets. I mentioned the UMD game and he told me about about a deal where I could buy 10 tickets for $100 for any sport, so you know, I could buy some basketball tickets too.

Invite 2 mite teams to come skate between periods. 20 kids + 40 parents is 60 butts in seats

There are so many, many things they could be doing that doesn't cost anything, yet will put butts in seats

RE: Promotion/Advertising for UMD Series
Here is a great example of some excellent PR the Sioux does. Its a behind the scenes show (think GLI promo) that airs Thursday night before each home series. You think ND is trying to get people motivated to attend the up coming home series? Do the Sioux have problems selling tickets? Yet, they find a way to still promote the series, even though tickets are already sold and they get butts in seats:

Best idea I have heard yet. It sure beats having to come up with some make believe idea in a marketing class.

And I guarantee, the students couldn't come up with anything less inspiring that what is being done now, and that people are actually getting paid for.
