I don't know whether to be excited or depressed about the prospects of the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi.

There are so many prospective disasters that could effect these games. Most significant is the terrorist threat. Every new day seems to bring a new threat and despite the police state that Russia is promising within its 1500-mile secure zone, I just get the sense that either we're going to have some very devastating terrorist activity, or else the whole games will have the atmosphere of having taken place in a giant prison.

Secondly, will be the anti-gay forces going up against the gay activists. This too could get ugly and detract from the spectacle of the sporting events.

Finally, the fact may also be that the weather just isn't cold enough for a winter games. Although that may be a case of the mountains at least having the snow, and most of the athletes village and the indoor activities being held in warmer weather.

Hopefully it goes off without a hitch but something tells me the days of incident-free sporting events of this magnitude (the Olympics and perhaps the World Cup) are over with.

The queers will ruin it for everyone as usual.

You know, every Olympics/World Cup it seems that every host nation is doomed to fail in it's hosting of the games, either due to unpopular social stances the government takes or due to not having the infrastructure in place on time. Each time it seems to go on without a major hitch. Not saying it's impossible for this to be a major failure, but I'm skeptical.
