This was the green & gold.

Pretty much every fanbase acts the same...if a successful coach leaves, the fans talk about it being a bad decision and criticize the way they handled the interview process

Yeah, and two fan bases are pulling their hair out in the interim. Then UAB announces, and JSU's on the hot seat (at least, to THEIR fans), and they sniff around some other coach and get that school's fans in a tizzy.

People around here were moaning and complaining and talking about how they hate "Loserville" now and blah blah blah, even though they did us a favor and we WANTED McGee to go. People just take it personally when someone leaves them, like the coach were their girlfriend and they're breaking up. Even if YOU hated the relationship, you want it to end on your terms, not someone else's.

True enough, but I really did mean the part about hating the 'vile. But then that predated McGee's tenure.

I trust we are doing the best we can with the resources we have available. I don't have any issues with the hire, I just think $700,000 is a lot of money for a guy leaving a job where he was making $200,000. I wasn't saying he didn't deserve the job, and he'll have my support, I just feel we could have probably paid him less.(this is assuming that figure is correct)

What he said. I had multiple reasons to detest Louisville that go back to before I had even heard of McGee. They're an arrogant, smug, and obnoxious bunch, and my feeling that way had nothing to do with XC McGee going there. Their hiring of Petrino and McGee's run back to his arms only reminded me of it.

Even then, "Loserville" and "that human slime Petrino" is about as far as I ever take it.

$700,000 would put you at #4 in the Sun Belt.

I figure that they would have paid him less if they could have gotten away with it. If you want to pry loose a guy who is at his alma mater and set up to make a title run, you better get serious if you want him to come.

It's a big assumption. I got it from the jsu board so that and 5 bucks will get you a latte at Starbucks. But it's probably pretty close I would think given the market and the fact he does have head coaching experience. We paid McGee 550k with no experience. And as it turned out no particular talent

The associated assistants pay is also a reason to pay him well.

The more the coach makes, the more in theory the assistants would make.

I strongly suspect that was an issue dealt with in the hiring process. From what the JSU board was saying his assistants there were making less than high school head coaches, and Clark had tried to get them taken care of without success. You can bet he addressed that on the front end of the new contract process here.
