Has Troy passed us in athletics?
I'm not sure of the answer. I'll hang up and listen.

RE: Has Troy passed us in athletics?
I don't keep up with Troy athletics..........somebody else might know. I'm sure Troy has a current edge in football, but UAB's men and women's basketball program look to be on the upswing. Hopefully, the football program is about to start trending in that direction too.

They may have an edge in student interest in the program.

the real thorn in their side is the fact that we have beat them like the last 5 or 6 times we've played in baseball

We be them soundly in every sport but football... and even with their superior football facilities and long legacy it takes overtime for them to beat us in what is surely our worst season in the history of our program.
Their baseball stadium was nicer than ours, but now with Regions Field we have the nicest baseball stadium in the NCAA.

But what if we had played them at the end of the year instead of the first game?

Maybe it is just that we haven't passed them yet in football.
Doesn't mean that I won't be wanting a W next year though.

I meant in head to head games between UAB and Troy
This has nothing to do with other games.

RE: Has Troy passed us in athletics?
Troy SHOULD have an edge in football with all their advantages gained over the nearly 100 years they have had a football team. During their D2 years, they were the "plan B" for many Auburn players who failed to stick it out on the Plains. They even provided shelter for the AU assistant coach when he got caught "keeping it down home, Cuz".
While Richard Scruchy was still the "Golden boy" of state medical lore & was on their (own) BOT, he poured millions into their facilities and the renovated stadium was at one time named for him. (It was only after getting on the UA BOT and championing UAB that he wound up in prison. Was there a connection? Enquiring minds might want to know)
Troy is the third wealthiest program in our state with a major amount coming in from their many connections for remote internet classes on military bases all over the world, and their favored position in Montgomery from George Wallace days.
Considering their advantages of FB program longevity, wealth, political position, and income from many sources UAB undergrad doesn't have, it is really a wonder they are not even farther ahead of our financially crippled program. Even in our last two terrible years (3-19), we played them a hard game until late - in the 4th quarter &/or overtime. Imagine what UAB might do with equivalent facilities and wealth?

We match up favorably with them in every sport but football, and we're fairly evenly matched there.
Now, consider this:
Troy football is at or near its ceiling. UAB football has barely scratched the tip of the iceberg.

Smaug nailed it. UAB and Troy each face obstacles in football that the other program doesn't. Overall, though, Troy's biggest obstacle - location - is a killer because it puts an absolute cap on the success they can achieve and sustain...if for no other reason than it anchors them at the Sunbelt "level" permanently. With our biggest obstacle - an indifferent and/or antagonistic Board - we can dream of a future where things are different and we can fully leverage the advantages which we have not as yet been allowed to tap.
