Interesting given the position is open with the graduation of Matt Wall. Wonder what the back story is in this case.

Not sure, other than we keep losing specialist. Stone had been there 3 years maybe no chance of PT. My concern is we never play any back ups on special teams, so what happens when someone gets hurt. Penza is gone, Detmer is not a punter and the walk on we have has never attempted a punt in a game. The Simpkins kid graduated and is not going to be back at UT for his 5th year as a kicker. I followed him in high school he averaged over 42 yards a punt and never punted a ball at UT. Corey Smith, Brad Dunavit, both punters have left the team. If these guys are leaving with hard feelings Toledo football, I question how much they or their families will be great alums as far as donations. A couple come from very well to do families. To make it better UT offered 3 kickers and all chose other schools.

Detmer is a decent rugby style punter.

I agree, he is, but rugby only works in certain schemes, we are not well rounded on special teams. Just feel we miss the boat on some talent. Great kickers from Ottawa Hills and Anthony Wayne never even considered Toledo as option. Tells me we have some challenges

You can't blame the guy from Ottawa Hills for chooising Michigan St. - he was a starter as a freshman, I believe he was a freshman All-American, won a P1G Championship, and won a Rose Bowl. Hard to pick UT over that.
