RE: NCAA proposal would put power in hands of BCS conferences
They will make it official. Imagine that the BCS schools want to increase schollys from 85 to 100. Current makeup would never allow it. But, under proposed legislation, it would pass because the BCS wants it.
Also, of consideration, but probably won't be discussed at this session, is the use of conference pods and the semi-final conference championship games that may come from them. Currently only 2 divisions per conference are allowed. Some non-AQ conferences that are spread out, such as CUSA and AAC, could benefit if this option were available. It could also open up expansion possibilities for AQ schools...

If you give a stipend to revenue sport athletes I'm pretty sure that you'll end up giving the same thing to the women's bowling team (i.e., everyone) How much will that cost?

Convention begins next Thursday so we really need to get the head coach processing going...
The power grab CONTINUES UNABATED as we move past the BCS era. The reality now is that about 8 schools have the power to actually be in the NC race no matter how the "playoff system" is structured. What the BCS enabled has not been undone by any factor in the new system so it is just a new look on the old structure - like repainting Legion Field.

Last I heard they were gonna word the legislation to only apply to full scholarship sports(men's basketball, football, and women's basketball). The title 9 issues could very well come into play if the requirement for equal representation extends to the stipend since most women's sports scholarships are partial. Perhaps something like this: 98 mens(85 fb, 13 bb) schollys could equate to about 185 ladies(15bb+ 170 1/2 schollys).
According to booster mailings I've gotten, UAB has about 350 athletes on scholarship. If they all got $2000 that would amount to $750K (even though I've read some suggestions as much as $10,000 each, which is ridiculous).
Remember, when the AQ/Playoff system was agreed to the decision was made to give non-AQ conferences $12M each to disperse to their members. This (cough..bribe) was to appease those conferences and grease to wheels for what's about to happen. So for most conferences that have less than 12 members that's at least $1M per school.

I think players should be able to make profit off of their name and their talent, but Title IX prevents them from making a profit off of their performance on the field. There is no reason why a player shouldn't be able to sign jerseys for money or be approached by a company for a paid endorsement. If it's really that sticky of a situation, put their money in a trust while they are college athletes and let them be able to access the money four years later (or after they graduate, whichever comes first).
