Turkish F-16 shoots down Syrian Fighter Jet
Link to Zerohedge story about it

Excerpt from Reuters:

"A Syrian plane violated our airspace," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told an election rally of his supporters in northwest Turkey. "Our F-16s took off and hit this plane. Why? Because if you violate my airspace, our slap after this will be hard,"

It's always a good day when an American made fighter shoots down a Mig.

That sounds like it was translated by babelfish. "Our eyes will roar with the sands of the living room"

"If you breach my airspace, our slap will be heavy handed," Mr. Erdogan told thousands of flag-waving supporters . . .

it makes a little more sense this way. More ghey, but more sensible.

Folks in Turkey saying it's a distraction to pry eyes away from a developing govt corruption scandal. I think there is an election coming up.

There have been border skirmishes and conflicts for over a year. Turkey is a key destination for refugees and also hosts rebel groups of various stripes (at least the political branches), including the primary opposition government and MB Islamists.

Turkey's government is in deep trouble as well, so it serves to benefit Erdogan, but this would've happened regardless.

I don't think this is the first time Syria has violated their airspace. I imagine there have been plenty of warnings in the past. At a certain point, warnings mean nothing if you don't act on them.

While I imagine the Syrian pilots have some pretty fair flying experience, considering their bombing of civilians et al, those MIGs have a lot of hours on the airframe and they probably aren't kept up all that well. It was a probably a turkey shoot for Turkey.

It's not, but it's the first time the Turks have shot one out of the sky. It's all heresay, but some of my Turkish friends think it's to cover up govt corruption. The Turkish govt tried to shut down Twitter last week because folks were using it disclose govt wrongdoing.

Turkish Govt Tries to Shut Down Twitter

Full article above.

Snippet:
Quote:Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan grows increasingly frustrated with how social media networks have been used to fan a scandal that now presents perhaps the biggest challenge to his authority since he came to power 11 years ago.

All I can say is "Don't fck with Turks." They are historically insane when it comes to the battlefield. This ain't going to end well for Syria if they decide to ramp this up.
