Rather than awarding just the Bayou Bucket for football and the Silver Glover for baseball, expand the cross-town rivalry to include more sports with something tangible for the overall winner (other university has to fly flags or have symblos of opponent on campus at specific time?). Not something expensive, but something visual that will attract attention.
How about:
- The Mayor's Cup
- A billboard at a major interchange (plus a few signs at the airport) congratulating the current holder of the Mayor's Cup
I've often thought that if I were a mayor or governor or something like that, I would sponsor all kinds of trophies -- and I'd try my best to present them in person. Actual governance might be suspect, but the voters hardly notice that...
Well technically, we already own the Mayor's Cup.

RE: The Mob
In todays PC world, it is tougher to have the sort of rivalries that we would really prefer. Like UT/A&M in the state or UT/OU between the states... Rice/UH for the city of Houston would have to exploit some stereotypes and have some good natured ribbing.

RE: The Mob
I think Rice-UH football would do better home and home. UH is probably going to want the game to be in its new stadium. Rice fans prefer a game at Rice stadium to going to Reliant. BBVA is too small with a capacity of 20,000. The big advantage of playing UH in all sports is the lack of travel costs. About ten years ago, the UH away game was included with the Rice season ticket.
I think UH will be forced to return basketball back to the importance it had with Guy Lewis because their new conference has several good basketball teams in it. Rice needs to make basketball more than an afterthought.
The first Rice-UH games in football and men's basketball were a big deal in 1971. 60K in football and over 7K in basketball. The series has dropped off since then due to:
1. the games have not determined a conference championship because both teams have not been good at the same time.
2. Rice does not have that much interest in it since our traditional rivalries were with Texas, A&M and LSU.

Why a neutral site? Curious about your thoughts on this.

RE: The Mob
I was thinking neutral site for several reasons - to average out the vagaries of who gets the HFA, and to be something like the Texas-OU game in Dallas was each year. Sort of a mid-season bowl game. Also felt that Reliant could hold the crowds we hope to eventually draw that would exceed the capacity of either stadium. But I realize some people on both sides can't give their HFA, real or imagined, so home-and-home would be fine with me.
But mainly I thought a neutral site expedited the possibilility of selling the game as a part of BOTH school's season ticket package, every year. I thought it would be easier to count it as a part of each team's season ticket package if it was in actuality NOT a road game. At a neutral site, the Rice ticket office could sell seats on the West side to Owl season ticket holders, and UH could seel to the season ticket holders on the east side. Repeat season ticket holders could get the same seats at the neutral site each year. Tough to do in a H-and-H series.
I like the idea of a mini-Sears Cup, or a Maggard Report Cup between the schools factoring the results of all competitions in all sports. If you want to foster the intracity completion let all the sports count.
If you want to emphasize the rivalry, this is one way. If not, let's just cut ties.

RE: The Mob
No neutral sites (with the possible exception of baseball's 3rd game like this year). For those wanting neutral sites how many of you went to Toyota Center? The only thing that happens with a neutral site is both school's fans wind up paying more than what they would with a home and home series. Yea both schools get a nice chunk of change but at the expense of pixxing off their real fans. The Rice attendance at Reliant has decreased each year.

It isn't ideal, but does attendance really suffer? We clocked in 35000 people at Reliant, which is more than we managed to pull in to HRS in 2010 (by a significant margin) OR UH managed to get at Robertson in 2011. It does make student attendance harder to make happen, but Rice could find ways to make it easy in terms of shuttle buses etc. To the alumni who live in Houston and are fans - does reliant dissuade you from going? As a non-Houston based alumnus, it didn't matter where the game was - I flew in, rented a car and drove to the stadium.
Would I prefer it as a home-home? yes. I am still leaning towards OO's viewpoint from a financial, logistics and attendance standpoint as well.
As for Toyota center - between the fact that it is basketball and we are pretty bad, a lot of people aren't going to show up. Tudor is pretty empty as well.

It was pitched to the Liberty Bowl people, and they liked it, but they couldn't fit the time needed to play it into their tight pre-game schedule.

Can't see any way that The MOB travels to South Bend.
Combine no funding with the game at the end of the first week of classes.
Is there any reason to travel to the (NM) Aggie game?
(In an ideal world, some part of the band would be able to travel to all games.)
The (Texas) Aggie game is more likely, in the third week of classes.
The Army game has possibly the smallest ROI.
The last time we traveled to West Point, we weren't allowed to perform at half time and were told that our script was completely inappropriate for a collegiate sporting event and could not be read. The only difference between them and Judge Hofheinz is that they told us beforehand.

Agreed, unfortunately.

Well, I would hope that it wouldn't be too much of a burden to travel to the other side of the parking lot... This game's at HRS.

Contrarian view here - even without a halftime performance, this trip in '95 was awesome as an undergrad. It seems like the opportunity for travel - farther afield than SA/College Station - would help in recruiting the MOB back up to reasonable numbers (having not made it to a game in person for a couple years, I was shocked/dismayed to see how far the band had shrunk this year). Some of my best MOB memories were made in NYC, Ann Arbor, Santa Barbara, Vegas...

2014 A&M is at College Station.
Grungy... I know there is no funding, however the point is that if there was interest in going to South Bend, now is the time to begin directed fund raising directed to that goal. Be proactive.

As much as I'd love to see a Rice game at ND, the MOB needs any and all donations they can get their hands on to go towards building a permanent band hall that isn't a constant source of frustration and embarrassment for the band. I can't imagine what a new student must think when they enroll for symphonic band and end up trying to play in an echoey, ancient gym.

perfectly reasonable alternative goal.
What are the plans so directed fundraising can begin?

Last I heard, it fell through when trying to find a "headline" donor (my term) to kick off the fundraising campaign -- a Rice requirement. If you know anyone with $1-2 million to spare...

Somewhere I have a pic of most of the saxophone section (plus friends) at Sammy's Noodle House in NYC. :)

Interesting that there is not a "Nike for Music" type of company that would want to be associated with Rice Bands.
