An MSNBC panel on Friday dug into the issue of “white privilege,” and why so many white Americans reject or cannot recognize this concept. In a discussion about the need for an extension of long-term unemployment benefits and how that issue resonates more with minorities than white people, The Cycle panel insisted that majority privilege contrasts greatly with America’s debate over the “value of black life,” “with bullets.” [...]

Center for Social Inclusion President Maya Wiley circled the conversation back to unemployment benefits, noting that long-term unemployed are often minorities particularly because of a lack of adequate public transportation in urban communities. [...]

Touré submitted that too many white people cannot recognize “white privilege” because they don’t perceive themselves to be able to take advantage of any privilege. “That you as an individual white person are not able to utilize your white power or white privilege, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist,” he contended, “just like that I don’t have a car doesn’t mean cars don’t exist.”

Wiley insisted that white people’s problems need to be communicated to them in order for them to understand their privilege and for all to understand why minorities need an extension of long-term unemployment benefits.

This. I've lived in both DC and Baltimore and the bad neighborhoods had far easier access to public transit than the good ones did. I will concede that some of that is because people with money tend to try and distance themselves from subway/metro lines as to make it more difficult for riff raff to just hop on the metro and go into their neighborhoods to cause trouble.

For decades minorities have been given millions of opportunities to improve their lot in life by getting college sports scholarships and one would think that would have made a difference in their communities. Instead they piss away that opportunity.

What MSNBC is doing is blaming whites for the lack of success of others thus giving those who aren't succeeding an excuse to not try to improve themselves. No doubt, being a failure is a little easier to swallow if it's someone one else's fault and not your own.

Of course, any motivated individual could come in and study engineering, but they aren't being raised to succeed in that way. 90% of the problem is the parents (or lack thereof).

When it comes down to the nitty gritty, liberal utopian colleges just want to make money by capitalizing on minorities, but no one will ever call them out on it.

When it comes down to the nitty gritty, liberal utopian colleges just want to make money by capitalizing on minorities, but no one will ever call them out on it.

It's usually someone outside of the university that wants to run it like a business (think SBOE). People usually don't go into academia for the money.

There's a whole shithole of a continent that can't blame their problems on white privilege.

Africa seems so peaceful and together, with those benevolent leaders and no wars or mass murders and the economic powerhouse that continent has evolved into. There's no unemployment at all over there. If only America was as advanced as Sudan or Somalia or Mali or Libya or Congo.
