Board question...please help
At what point do you get pissed off at your parents for constantly battling you over the check when you go out to eat at a restaurant? Am I the only one that has this problem? My dad is 83 and still refuses to stop it. Tonight..I wanted to strangle him.03-banghead

Idk man, I'd just be glad your parents are in your life and let him do what makes him happy.

Either they can spend it on you now or you can inherit it later. You would do the same for your kids.

This.

And hope that if you make it to 83, people (esp. your kids) won't give you any grief about small stuff.

Never. If they want to pay, let them pay, unless they truly can't afford it.

I get the same thing. My dad is 88 and still fights me for the check.
Only way I can pay is if I leave to go to the restroom, catch the waiter or waitress and give them a card before he
gets the check.

This. You'll always be the child. I wish that my mother were around to pick up the bill.

My mother died over 20 years ago. My dad got remarried about two years ago. He was 86 then. Seems really odd. Miss my mom at Christmas most.

Just excuse yourself to the bathroom, find the waitress and give her your card. Tell her when your father asks for the bill to just run your card and bring it to you.
I've done this many times with my in-laws and grandparents. Just don't do it all the time, your father is proud of his station in life and his ability to pay for dinner, let him more often than not if you know he is willing and able.

Be thankful you can still have dinner with your parents. Stop battling. From time to time, do the grab the waiter if the opportunity presents, Just remember to always say "Thanks, for dinner, Dad".

It's things like this you'll be like "WTF did I worry about that" when a parent is gone. You are lucky to still have your dad around. He's 83 years old and you are still his little boy. That's not a bad thing. Let him do whatever he wants to do.

I'm 70 and always pick up the check. Why, because they have mortgages, kid expenses (orthodontics), school tuition, etc. I've have no mortgage, no debt, and a healthy portfolio. They don't need added expenses. I can easily live with the expense.

Sure they can wait to inherit but I plan on that not happening for another 25 years. Plus by picking up the tab, it is a tax free generational transfer not subject to gift tax limitations. Or consider it wealth redistribution.

That is good idea.

It's not worth a fight at all.

Find ways to prepay for things (as suggested above) when you can, and let him feel purposeful at others. At their age, there is so much that they "must" do and pay for that they really like the control of those times when they can choose to do so.

Above all, don't let it tarnish your relationship with him.

We just operate off of the idea that if you picked the place then you pay. That's probably because we all have pretty divergent tastes.

Are you gainfully employed? If you're not self employed, in particular do you pay FICA? Are you under sayyyy 35?

Then you're the one who is screwed, and he's merely evening up the tally a bit.
