Army hires Jeff Monken
But this seems like an odd time for him to leave Georgia Southern, who is moving up to FBS next season. Why leave for Army now? GaSo has solid support and will be FBS, and Army seems like a huge risk given their recruiting limitations. This just seems like an odd move to me.

He's capitalizing on his Florida win. Who knows how Georgia Southern will fare with the move to FBS? It may take them 4 or 5 years to become week in week out competitive on that level.

By moving to Army now, he can potentially move up the coaching latter faster. Turn Army into a good team and the opportunities to take a better job will be there. Paul Johnson going from Navy to Georgia Tech is evidence of that.

My initial reaction was "why is Army hiring Monken after going 1-11 at Southern Miss?"

Oops! Wrong Monken. 03-banghead

Todd -- USM
Jeff -- Georgia Southern

04-cheers

Maybe Todd will turn USM around and then get lured away to Navy. 04-rock

RE: Army hires Jeff Monken
Still no confirmation from Army or Monken that he is the new head coach.

As to why; if he can make Army competitive like Navy could mean a huge pay increase. Monken makes something like 450k/yr at Ga So. While Army's previous head coach made only 400k; Navy's Niumatalolo makes 1.5 million. Also, I imagine the benefits of being a federal employee (pension, etc) add up to alot in the long term especially at those salary levels.

The interesting thing is that both Monken and Niumatalolo started their coaching careers under Paul Johnson at Hawaii and followed him to Navy. Monken also worked for Johnson at both Ga So and Ga Tech.

Why is this an odd move? Coaching Army is a much more prestigious (albeit challenging) job for him.

Just read a NY Times article indicating Army is willing to make some institutional changes in order to make Army more competitive. Apparently, the brass has finally grown weary of getting whipped. After failing to be competitive for most of the last two decades, the administration is finally coming around to the idea that real institutional changes will have to be made in order to give the football squad a chance.

Tough to say. I think GaSo would beat Army (easily) if they played right now, but I also think Army has a higher ceiling -- they just have to get serious about reaching it.

They didn't make a lot of suggestions about how they intend to become competitive in that article. Allowing players to be over 300 lbs is something all the service academies should do. Just because your over 300 lbs doesn't mean you're out of shape. Slightly easing the entry requirements seems like a given until you have a football first last and only guy leading men into battle. Maybe it's the same and maybe he gets some guys killed. I think Army is stuck. Navy's success is about as good as any of the service academies can hope. When Paul Johnson gets fired from GT one of the service academies should hire him. That seems like a no brainer.

1. Football players at the SA's can be over 300 lbs. Those players have to be within the military Ht/Wt standards before graduating/commissioning.

2. The entry requirement at Navy and AFA is accomplished by sending potential CFB players to the respective Preparatory Schools. Its my understanding the Army doesn't use they prep school in such a fashion.
