RE: Practice facility a go
Because I couldn't find a better looking basketball locker room than the heat version which looks more luxurious than your examples. That's what I want JJ to show the recruits. Not something made out of particle wood. My example had nothing to do with the occupant but rather the beauty of it.

Regardless. My points are the PF needs a locker room and the proposed area is too small for a first class PF.

The space is what the space is. That's where the facility is going regardless of the size. Is it smaller than it should be? Absolutely. But they are going to have to make the best of the situation.

RE: Practice facility a go
You know what we have now is not bad, it's very accessible for the players to play pick up games, which they do all off-season. They go over there to shoot around all year. If you build a Taj Mahal they wouldn't have the same access for them and the local kids (recuits) to play. The point is the practice gym only gets used for practice a small percentage of time at ODU. One of the things recruits like, is having access to a gym to workout. JJ if he could take the current one and drop it behind the Ted he would.

Frankly, if it doesn't come close to the link above, its not worth building. Its supposed to be a huge boost to recruiting and from what I've seen, it will be nice but not a game changer. The exterior is pretty ugly, the signage is bad and the view from the street is terrible. Not sure why they can never get it right architecturally. If space is an issue, couldn't they build taller? I'd rather not spend the money unless they are going to do it first class. The Ted was a game changer because it was first class, pro-style arena only smaller. This should include first class locker rooms and high tech screens and gadgets everywhere. I true showplace. If we need to wait for more money to do that, then its worth it.

I haven't seen renderings, but here is another example of a state of the art practice facility going up.

FWIW, VCU doesn't have a facility like the Powhatan Sports Complex and this will act as that for Georgetown except with a focus on hoops. Put the Powhatan Complex and the new practice facility together and we stack up fairly well as an athletic department.

VCU's practice facility will be pretty nice when it's done. Two separate courts with stacked offices/mens and womens locker rooms/trainers and weight rooms in the middle.

It won't come close, because VCU is building in a larger space with a larger budget. ODU is not permitted to make the building taller due to the decision of the University higher-ups.

VCU's courts will be about 10' below ground, another constraint we have in Norfolk (damn water table)

I am just curious but why would the higher-ups care about the height of the building? (Assuming higher-ups was not just a pun) 03-wink

Because below ground it is easier to hide the spoils of their stealing, player fights and other misdeeds!

Here is some stuff. We are getting a new HD video board this summer and scorer table sign board...big yea!!!

The ODU Practice Gym will break ground this Summer, this design is done. Will have two locker rooms, offices for both men's and women's staffs. Will have one full court and an additional half court. Only one weight room. Will have two high tech video rooms, one for each. They would like to raise another mil and that would complete the fund raising. It's going to be a very nice addition to the campus.

I have not seen any final renderings if the interior but we've done a good job with the layout given the limited space and the video room looks awesome. Looking forward to seeing something official.

If some had even bothered to look at the new University Master plan they would have noticed that we will have many new buildings that will have many more floors. The only way we can grow is UP ! That is very clear in the master plan.

That makes perfect sense and the new football stadium will be really steep, a lot like lane stadium, home of the Virginia Tech chokies.
I have been doing a lot of web hopping and it seems a lot of colleges with a larger athletic footprint all seem to be plagued with parking issues.
At the rate we are growing and with times of having Basketball and Football games going on the same day, how does ODU plan to deal with the parking issues? I saw the Master Plan and there isn't a lot of parking places, unless those garages shown are really tall. I believe ODU will be a Football powerhouse and I think they should plan for the future making the stadium achieve an attendance of 70K+. I was an intern at Newport New Shipbuilding and everybody talks about ODU football, which is why we sell out of every game. Everyone wants to come out and can't 03-weeping! I don't think Powhatan is sufficient for the size of the stadium and I think the university is aware of that, which is why the process of hiring a consultant is dragging. There is about 12 acres of space once the apartments are gone, just to give some perspective, Ohio Stadium sits on 10 acres. I don't think the new stadium will be able to use all the 12 acres, because its so close to the water. There are a lot of issues there. How are they going to make all this work? Why are they putting a Basketball practice in front of Starbucks?

Why are they putting a Basketball practice in front of Starbucks?

To your last question, it makes sense to have the practice facility and TED near each other. In addition, the bookstore and Starbucks will be moving. The current bookstore will be turned into a gym.

You should really define what you mean by "powerhouse". That word is typically saved for teams like Alabama and Ohio State.

And when talking about stadium size, you should look at the long term. Most NFL teams are downsizing. The great TV options available to fans are forcing teams to add more to a stadium than just football, hot dogs and beer. Those TV options are just going to continue getting better. This of course requires more space, reducing capacity for the sake of a better fan experience. A lot of colleges are following suit, save for Texas A&M. And our folks in the athletic department are aware of this and how important it is to keep an excess demand for tickets. Build too big and you reduce the need for donations. 70k+ IMO, is an unreasonable expectation for any time in the future.

So they actually did include locker rooms? AMAZING [/sarcasm]
