Stanford recruiting...
...sounds a lot like Rice recruiting.

Nice article.
Quote:"The application has five essays. If you can do that while they're taking AP classes and playing HS football, you can compartmentalize and manage your time wisely,'' Shaw said.
"Those guys have proven to me they can fight through tough situations in the fourth quarter.''
How does this compare with the Rice process for football scholarship candidates, which many here have complained about?

I know what the difference used to be, not sure whether that has changed or not. The problem was not writing the essay itself--that was typically done during the official visit and was really no big deal. I think Rice has one longer essay, Stanford has five shorter ones, Northwestern used to have three, not sure about Duke. The problem was that evaluating the essay could take 4-6 weeks at Rice, whereas Duke and Stanford and Northwestern could make an immediate decision (I think the essay was more a perfunctory thing for them, a box that had to get checked off rather than something that could actually delay the decision).
Fred cited this problem as a specific reason for his decision to go to Duke. I am pretty sure it never changed under Bobby. Todd did some talking about getting some process improvements, but I'm not sure what if anything he actually got done. It did not seem to be a hot burner item with Chris, so maybe Todd did get something done. I'm fairly certain Ranger Rick did nothing about it. Will be interesting to see what Dr. K does in this area. He has the benefit of knowing exactly how Stanford does it, and that should give him credibility to argue for any proposed change.
