Because it's fun to pretend you have actual rivalries that matter to anyone.

Oh, I thought it was the fact that Birmingham is a Pro-Tide city and the UA Branch of Tuscaloosa controls the City of Birmingham college sports.

When it comes to Troy and USA, the state's attitude toward each is a result of political leverage practiced in Montgomery. Troy was the default fall-back school for Auburn players for many years, even to taking their "fallen" coach (made famous by the "Keep it down home, Cuz" scandal) that also removed Pat Dye. Troy, under its then President Adams, earned gratitude from G. Wallace by expelling the school's campus newspaper editor for writing negatively about Wallace in the paper. His reward was a new Troy campus in Montgomery, to match the one there for Auburn.

Because Jeffco (mainly B'ham at that time) did not join the state in backing Wallace, it did not get a single completed Interstate connection to the rest of the state until ALL others in the state were completed. For decades, the local Interstates ended in Irondale (I-20), Fultondale & Hoover (I-65), Fairfield (I-59/20) and Roebuck (I-59). Mobile, on the other hand, backed Wallace and their reward was their own independent medical school, pharmacy school and their legislative members were given the controlling posts in both houses. Pierre Pelham became President pro temp in the Senate and Sage Lyons became Speaker of the House. The state has recruited numerous industries for the growth of Mobile while doing nothing for Jeffco.

It was not just an accident that the state's largest metropolitan city did not get any state university until 1969 and then only under the control of the "Old Guard" Crimson centered BOT. Even then, the UAB leadership had to fight the Tuscaloosa campus for just about every nonmedical graduate school it wanted to start at UAB.

03-lmfao After what the County Commission has done to this region, it may not be long before that becomes an option. My water bill's an extra $100-$120 a month because of that sewer bull****.

edit: I mean nothing against you and I appreciate you trying to stick up for us... that being said. South and Troy fans want so badly to be in a better conference.

UAB's basketball program is what sets it apart from the other two. South fans have nothing to say about our football program.

Troy hasn't beat us in baseball in what is it 3 years now? The game is obviously a bigger game for them than us. We'd still rather play Memphis than Troy State.

What they don't know or don't understand is what happened in the mid 2000's to hurt our program.

Watson Brown failed to bring in staff to keep up the level of play that was established in the early 2000's.
During the 2005 season things started going downhill.

2006 we fired Watson Brown and wanted to hire Pat Sullivan our Offensive coordinator at the time to continue our program. That got shot down by the board and then we went after Jimbo Fisher which also got shot down. Pat Sullivan is a Heisman winner from Auburn you can do the math on that one. Alabama was chasing after Nick Saban at the time and Jimbo was his offensive coordinator at LSU before he left for Miami.

2007 Paul Bryant Jr's buddy Neil Callaway was given the job without really being competent. Half the team left the program which not only killed our scholarship numbers but left us in an APR fiasco. APR regulations forced us to not be able to practice as much as other schools in conference and made us regulate who we could allow in our program. I think we had 40 players for that spring practice before the recruiting class got there.

5 years of "rebuilding" with an incompetent coach, APR issues, and poor facilities and we got another coach. I think it took to year 4 of Callaway to get up to D1 numbers using JUCO transfers and such.

Our depth is still wrong. we have 15 people graduating including walk ons.

On the topic about baseball... You have played our mid week team... We save our best pitching for weekends. That has a lot to do with it... We beat every other team in the state as well as beating Alabama in the FSU regional TWICE knocking them out. As well as beating Auburn 11-2.... Our RPI is normally in the 20s and yours is in the 200s. There's no question our baseball program is light years ahead of yours... But the same can be said of your basketball program.

I have been impressed with Troy's baseball team. Had a great year last year. UAB has, IMO, under preformed in recent years (other than the surprise conference tournament championship). But Troy is not light years ahead of UAB at all. Every team saves their best pitchers for the weekend. So our middle of the week team beat your middle of the team. What's the difference?

You do have a point. You have our number... But our stats don't lie... 2 conference championships in 3 years, in one of the toughest conferences in college baseball is nothing to shake a stick at.

Coach pierce always acts weird the week of UAB for whatever reason.

You guys play us hard in nearly every sport. Football included.

Basketball will get off the ground for us soon. Maestri had just taken the program so far down that it will take time.

Perhaps by the 2020 census when Mobile may be the #1 city in Alabama followed by Huntsville at #2 you will see what it has to do with where UAB stands in rivalries in Alabama. Most housing being developed in B'ham in recent years seems to be aimed at childless couples or singles who don't like commuting. That kind of population doesn't seem to promise development of a "neighborhood" kind of cultural stability.

RE: Why Do USA and Troy Hate You?
USA has shot up good with its football program but let's be honest they built it playing weaker opponents before the went to the Sunbelt. It built their fanbase but when they went D1 it showed last year.

And when they played D1 this year, they went 6-6 in a conference that had a winning record (I believe) against CUSA. USA's football program is in much better shape than at least one of the other non-bcs football program in this state. Maybe two.
