USF basketball PG hit with injury again
USF's Howard Injures Knee Again
Skip directly to the full story.
A Tribune staff report
Published: Jul 6, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
University of South Florida point guard Chris Howard is expected to miss a second consecutive season after tearing the ACL in his left knee for the second time in nine months.
Howard, who was slated to be the Bulls' starting point guard, suffered the injury last Thursday. He missed all of last season after tearing his ACL on Nov. 8. Howard declined comment Wednesday.
Without Howard and sophomore Collin Dennis, who left the program in May, senior walk-on Chris Capko is the only returning point guard for the Bulls. Last year without Howard, the Bulls finished last in the Big East in assists, assist/turnover ratio and turnover margin.
This kid has had some really bad luck, So know it looks like Capko and incoming freshmen Bozeman

Man that sucks. We had our share of injuries last year so it is not fun.

I don't think you had the kind of injuries and roster problems that USF has had the last three years.
As of today, USF will only have 5 scholarship players that will be able to participate in it's upcoming pre-season tour of Italy this summer. We have a couple transfers who won't be eligible until the end of the Fall semester and three kids coming in on scholarship this Fall.

We were playing with, essentially, 6 legit players last year, football walk-ons and guys who should have been redshirted and, essentially, couldn't practice. Maybe not as bad as South Florida but not exactly a walk in the park either.

I would say that the 2 situations are very similar. But USF did extremely well considering the talent level was below every other BE team last year. They hung in there with everybody in the BE, even beating Georgetown lmfao . They did not really get blown out by anyone.
Cincy also did very well considering their circumstances. I was surprised that they did as well as they did with a sorta lameduck coach and a very limited roster. With the recruits that Cincy has been pulling in, things should get back to normal real quick, while USF has to go thru another year of torture. This situation certainly does not help.

pretty much the death knell for coach macullum, good guy good floor coach but is in way over his head. i was somewhat optimistic w/ howard, now that we're once again shorthanded at pg w/ dennis transferring we'd be lucky to win 3 be games. and our recruiting is still pathetic. any good coaching canidates out there? someone w/ star power who can bring in recruits and fans like huggins (w/o the baggage) would've been perfect.

I hate to see any kid go thru serious injurys... sounds to me like its time for him to considering hanging up his sneakers... so he will be able to walk at age 45.

Actually his knees will probably be stronger than before, and the way surgery is nowadays there will be very little scaring and hopefully arthritis down the road. He will be fine physically. The biggest problem he is going to have is mental.
By the time he comes back it will be three years since he last played competitive basketball. He has been on the shelf his first two years in college and didn't play before that b/c he went to prep school to work on his grades.

I think South Florida needs to dump Macullum (sp?) and take a good, long look at one of Billy Donovan's assistant coaches up in Florida. They have national championship experience, and experience coaching in a tough basketball league. They also have Florida ties, something South Florida needs BADLY.

uconn's assistant coach seems to pop up a lot as a potential canidate, although i can't remember the name, i'd prefer a coach with some northeastern/big east ties maybe someone like hobbs, bobby lutz from charlotte would be a good fit if we're willing to buy him out of his contract. i would think the allure of coaching in the big east would be able to attract some pretty good canidates.

You're right, I remember him being mentioned as a candidate for other jobs. I don't know if Lutz would leave Charlotte for South Florida, even with the Big East connections, I don't think he had interest in the Clemson job when it was open a few years ago, but Hobbs is a possibility.
