OT - Baker Mayfield
Most likely won't be here, but I'll be interested to see where he lands.

I'd say SMU is probably is only in-state option.

Rice, Florida Atlantic and Washington State were the schools who offered scholarships. Another sign Bailiff can identify talent.

Dang; so he turned us down to walk on at Tech ? Geez - gotta wonder about his critical thinking ability.

It's more complicated than that. My understanding is that he really wanted to go to TCU. By the time it became clear the Frogs weren't going to offer him, Rice had a commitment from German, and didn't have room for a second QB.

Sometimes in such a situation, a recruit will "commit" while waiting for the offer they really want. I give Mayfield credit for not making a promise he didn't intend to keep.

ETA: the article says Mayfield "won't be allowed to transfer to another Big 12 school," but Tech has no control over that. They can refuse to give him a release, but that only means he can't get an athletic scholarship until the following year.

Mayfield isn't on scholarship so how is it that Tech can restrict him? I bet TCU would have loved to have Mayfield this year.

RE: OT - Baker Mayfield
Had a chance to watch him in HS and not at all surprised what he did at Tech. Kid has serious game and Lake Travis (LT) runs a pretty sophisticated spread offense. Not your typical HS fare. To walk-on and start at QB at Big XII program shows how much seasoning he already had in HS.

Agree w/ the SMU comment given he was mentored by Gilbert at LT when he was a frosh. Already a strong connection there. If German is equal to this kid as both offered by Rice (which have heard German is real deal), we will have quite a high class problem at QB next year.

According to this page, that doesn't matter.

As for TCU, I saw some of Boykin this year. I thought he looked better than people give him credit for, and his passing stats were decent (better than Pachall's). I'm sure you're right that TCU wished they had taken Mayfield, but hindsight is always 20/20. Evaluating recruits is hard. Patterson's track record is better than most.

I think Patterson's track record on defense is better than most, would have to argue on the offensive side.

Latest rumor:

‏@aasdanny
A source close to Baker Mayfield says the former Texas Tech QB will enroll at OU in January and he plans to walk onto the football team.

Seems an odd choice.

Mayfield won't be allowed to transfer to another Big 12 school, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad.

But going to OU? Hmmm...

After suffering thru Blake Bell this year, OU could use Mayfield. He's a proven commodity. Stoops obviously felt his young QBs this year weren't ready.

Gravy..I did see that post.

Jake Trotter (Big XII reporter) had video in that article link and was saying same thing as Schad's quote..very unlikely he would go to Big XII school....so I was just responding to the OU gossip/speculation that seems a bit off from what the 'experts' were saying (Schad and Trotter). I think it is very strange that the kid could have a scholarship this year in numerous D-1 schools but if goes to OU (or any Big XII school) that he has to wait an additional year to get a scholarship. Unless Stoops promised him something (unlikely), why would he do that?

Fair enough. "Unlikely" is different than "won't be allowed." Not the first time somebody from ESPN has been sloppy with wording.

It's an unconventional move, but it actually makes some sense. Bell is a junior and has solidified his role as the starter, so the job will likely be wide open when Mayfield becomes eligible. Mayfield is presumably not intimidated by Knight, Thompson, or the younger guys. The risk/reward is probably as good as it gets. I suspect Stoops promised him a scholarship in 2015 which is a good deal for OU.

The kid has already shown a willingness to go to a school where he doesn't have a scholarship, so it's not that odd.

He's walking on in the spring semester. They haven't said whether or not he will have a scholarship in the fall of 2014. I would expect the walk-on status is for one semester only. Just a guess.

Michael Brewer also transferring from Tech. He'll graduate in spring and be eligible as a graduate student for 2014.

Was, like Mayfield, offered by Rice out of HS (class of 2011).
