I'd be completely satisfied with an 8-team playoff. Top 8 BCS teams make it.

1st round:
MSU and Stanford in the Rose Bowl
Baylor vs Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl
OSU vs AU in the Sugar Bowl
Mizzou/UCF vs FSU in the Orange Bowl

1st round played weekend right after Christmas. Semi-finals played right after New Years. NC game played 2nd weekend of January. If you want to substitute UCF for Mizzou then I would have no problem with that.

I think we have a decent shot at getting to 16 at some point, but realistically this could go 4 to 6 to 8 to 12 to 16, so it could take a while.

I hope you're right, but only if the g5ers get a shot at a few spots. Who knows what those p5 greedy bastards will try to do in the next ten years.

We even get snubbed by fake 64 team projections this year...

16 could be done in a way that would eliminate any "concerns" about the "academic calendar" at semester schools.

1st round--anytime between the 1st and 3rd Saturday in December.
Quarterfinals--New Years' Eve night and New Years' Day
Semifinals--Second weekend in January
Finals--3rd weekend in January

The bottom line is that 8 is enough ( no pun intended)

16 would be ideal.

But if we must dream then UCLA at a 4 seed and Virginia Tech at a 11 seed tells me that this year's Sun Bowl is going to be a blow out.
