Why is this a stupid post? It brings up 2 very good points. This is not the ideal bowl situation to engage fans due to the distance, timing and cost. Also, NIU may lose a lot of money on this bowl which is a serious issue because of our limited athletic budget.
This bowl pays out relatively little (even less than the LCPB) and costs to get the team, band, cheerleaders, administrators, pampered donors, etc. there will be very high. Time to set up a couple more Soldier Field games.

I would like to disagree with several members of this board. Bowls are for the fans. If NIU wants to get invites to good bowls they need to bring a lot of fans. We will probably have a very bad fan turnout for this bowl and it will not help NIU's image.
Why did Iowa get a News Years Day bowl? It is because they bring a lot of fans to the game.

Well - hopefully our fan base's travel will be compared to Oregon State or Boise in Hawaii on December 24. Anything else is just unfair.
And nope, not really true. They got a New Years Day bowl because of conference tie-ins. They have 2 teams going to BCS games so the next 3 best teams in the conference all get to play in the conference tie-in games. Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska all move up slots due to MSU and Ohio St going to BCS games. Michigan and Minnesota both technically finished below Iowa and Nebraska in the Legends and Penn St wasn't eligible. Therefore, Michigan and Minnesota didn't move up. It was all pretty straight forward and had nothing to do with travel or any of that nonsense.

RE: Not Happy with Poinsettia Bowl
First of all our fans are known for being cheap and that is fair.
Second the bowl is for the players and our seniors have been to godaddy and boise.
Third Detroit bowl is so good it wont exist anymore.
Fourth Next year we add much better weather bowls.
Fifth the MAC commissioner got us a deal going to SD. Our coaching staff blew it and if they won the MACC they would have been positioned to get a huge payday for after next year.
Sixth lets be happy we are going to a bowl. In 05 we lost and went NOWHERE and it sucked.

Let's not forget the MAC stepped up last year financially to help ensure NIU going to the Orange Bowl would not be a financial burden. The MAC could have "pocketed" more of that money if it was not willing to help NIU. Because of work, some of us couldn't go to the Orange Bowl, but we contributed to the funds to help defray some costs for students.

We wanted this bowl. We have picked most of our bowls. We have done a good job with our bowls.
We have never had to go to Detroit lol.

Poinsetta Bowl acceptance likely appears to have another MAC team a bowl. Wasn't much to choose from. 9 bowl elgible teams did not make it, I think 5 or 6 from Sunbelt/MAC. 6-6 Ohio as 13 pts dogs I think to ECU.No business in a bowl.
BTW.....8 BCS schools got bowl bids at 6-6. 6 beat an FCS school. The other 2 beat Old Dominion. UNC put 80 on them, winning by 60, PITT only beat them by 10.

MAC did us solid. Remember the Big East (AAC) left UConn at the curb a couple of years ago, and UConn lost millions.

I'll take your point one step farther.
Why doesn't the B1G drop Illinois and invite NIU to take their place? Because Illinois brings over 40,000 fans to their games.
I can not criticize anyone on this board for lack of support, but lack of fan support is the ultimate glass ceiling for the Huskies.
By the way, I have no complaints about the Huskies in the Poinsettia Bowl. I just wish I had not already made my Christmas vacation plans.

RE: Not Happy with Poinsettia Bowl
Looking forward to this matchup. I was a little dissappointed that we couldn't get the Vegas bowl, but it sounds like USU was going to be in the Poinsettia whether or not we won the CCG because USC/Vegas didn't want a USC/USU rematch. I always want to play an AQ team in the bowl so I was super irritated that we weren't going to get to do that. But......then I heard Poinsettia was working on trying to get NIU and I'm super excited about this matchup. IMO we ended up with the best matchup out of the MWC bowl opponents. NIU is certainly the highest ranked opponent any of us are facing so that is exciting too. Unfortunately I can't make it to the game. It's within driving distance, but the 26th just doesn't work.
Can't wait to see how the Aggie D holds up against Lynch and the NIU O. Should be a great game. We have some things to fix offensively after the MWC CCG, but hopefully we will be serviceable. Win or lose I think this will be an exciting competitive game.

No. Iowa got the Outback Bowl because the OB gets the #4 B10 team this year, with two B10 teams being in BCS bowls. Iowa is slotted right where they deserve to be, behind Ohio State, Michigan State and Wisconsin and ahead of Michigan and Nebraska.
It has nothing to do with how many fans they bring to the game. Michigan and Nebraska would probably travel better to the Outback Bowl than Iowa.

Glendayle welcome to the board! Excited to play your boys, as I think this is a good matchup for both teams. Lord knows how far you would have gone without the injury to Keeton. As it stands; I am looking forward to Lynch vs. your D; what wrinkles will we throw in? Really wanted to go; went in '06 and had a blast - San Diego a fun town; worth the trip. Will be watching from across the country on the big screen instead. Looking forward to a great game

Why don't people understand the bowl system? It's really not that complicated. Be happy we didn't end up playing 6-6 Pitt in Detroit.

Rest assured, everyone in the Athletic Dept. from Frazier and Carey on down is VERY happy that we're going to the Poinsettia Bowl considering the alternatives.

Since we've started to going to bowl games regularly, have you ever gotten a call or email from NIU asking which bowl we should go to? Didn't think so.
Bowl games are for the players and coaches first and foremost. And, you can bet the players and coaches are thrilled to go to San Diego.
