I'm sure G5 conferences regularly offer incentives to bowls. But they don't generally issue a freaking press release advertising it.

In 2001 the ACC paid the Boise Bowl six figures to take Clemson.

I am guessing that Benson was trying to prove his worth by saying how hard he tried. The problem is that it didn't work. WKU is leaving so while I am sure we appreciate the thought, it won't do us any good in the future and know everyone can use this as fuel against the Sun Belt. "You can't pay a bowl to take your teams!". I don't mind trying it, but don't talk about it.

When you have 5 schools left out of bowl games you need to release something to show you are thinking outside the box...

good move by Benson too bad it didn't work. It would have been great to see one ASU fans face if it had and the SBC spent money to get WKU a bowl

Although Benson may be trying to save face by announcing this publicly, it's anyone's guess whether there was any real effort to aid WKU in getting a Bowl...especially paying to take us with SBC money. But you are correct, I imagine the outcry would have been legendary from some SBC fans about the SBC using it's coffers to get WKU into a Bowl, especially if ULM, Troy, USA, and TxSt weren't chosen.

That sticks to WKU as much as the Sun Belt. They couldn't convince LCPB to take an 8-4 WKU team even with cash! Ignorant, but that's the appearance. It really reflects badly on the bowl system more than either SBC or WKU but it won't be perceived that way.

Benson should have just let it die.

I assume you mean me. Nah, I really don't mind it because WKU is still paying dues and generating revenue. I just wish Benson hadn't announced it.

The bowl selection process was different for me since it had to do with jumping up in the SBC standings.

SBC is at the bottom of the bowl food-chain. I respect the fact he at least tried something. 79 teams for 70 spots and competing with ACC and Pac 12...

CUSA wouldn't have been able to place an extra team either even with cash this year.

The offer to the I Bowl was well in excess of. $100k for any Sun Belt

They didn't. See FAU.

FAU was 6-6. I don't have any expectations of bowling at 6-6 in ant G5 conference. It happens, but it isn't guaranteed. 8-4 in any conference besides the Belt gets you a bid.

Ask Temple about that. They went 8-4 and stayed home a few years back as a MAC member

LaTech won 9 out the WAC and CUSA lobbying on their behalf and they stayed home as well.

No LaTech first turned down a bid and then lobbied for somewhere else.. Huge difference..

LT hubris cost them a bid, not their record or playing in the WAC

How about this one? The 2003 NIU team went 10 - 2 with wins over nationally ranked Alabama (yes that one) and nationally ranked Maryland teams plus also beat Iowa State out of the BIG12. We ended up climbing all the way to #12 in the AP poll and then lost to BG and Toledo in conference and missed on the MACC game. Both teams that made the MACC, BG one year removed from Urban Meyer coaching and Roethlisberger led Miami OH made bowl games and we got shut out. We had Michael Turner playing RB. Talk about a snub.

True, but I don't blame LaTech for wanting to play outside Louisiana.

RE: SBC made offers...
The point is, teams from the MAC, WAC and Sun Belt all have examples of teams with eight or more wins staying home. The only reason C-USA doesn't is because Cincinnati, Louisville, TCU, Houston and a few others were part of the conference, which was attractive to bowl partners.

They won't regress now that the G5 is making a hard effort to get their teams in bowls and make their own.
