Crowd for Kennesaw St. pleases Cronin

There was a surprisingly decent crowd of 6,627 at Fifth Third Arena on Friday for UC’s 96-67 victory over Kennesaw State. Granted, that’s a long from a sellout, with the arena only about half full, but considering the quality of opponent and the fact that the students are not in school because it’s Thanksgiving weekend, it wasn’t too bad.
“I appreciate our fans today,” Mick Cronin said. “Without the students, lot of people came out to support us on what’s normally a holiday situation, so I really appreciate that.”
Cronin took issue with a story I wrote after the UMass Lowell game in which I said that the Bearcats won’t return to tougher competition until they go to New Mexico next week. Cronin said South Carolina Upstate, the Bearcats’ opponent on Tuesday, is much better than people realize and called them “a rock-solid mid-major.”
“I don’t care what our opponent’s name is,” Cronin said. “South Carolina Upstate can play. They’ve got real players. They beat Virginia Tech. They blew a close game late at Tennessee and they lose by one at Kent State.”
The Bearcats were impressive at the free throw line Friday, making 16 of 20, including 8-for-8 by Titus Rubles.
“The way he shoots the ball he should be an 80 percent free throw shooter,” Cronin said.
