That's possible, but as much as Rice likes to run it, I don't see them getting to 63. Our run defense stacks up better against rushing teams than against passing attacks.

But, on the flip side, we tend to turn any team into a passing attack.

Here's hoping we can put 22 guys on the field without burning any redshirts at this point in the season.

Can Mullens or Long play safety?

It might not have anything to do with S&C. Could it just be the team is so over matched talent wise they are getting pummeled on the field?

RE: 5 more players out vs Rice?
For every 2 or 3 "out" with serious injuries, there may be 10 or more who are a step or two - or three - slower (possibly due to S&C deficiencies) to get into an offensive or defensive play due to nagging pain. It can be like us when deciding do we feel badly enough not to go to work at all or to "tough it out" knowing we may be less effective as an employee that day. A "3" playing through pain may play more like a "2" when covering an assignment. When a team is already short of "3"s, it can look bad against a team that is playing at full strength.

Biggest effect is practice as scout team members are moved to the 2-deep. So you have guys who are not as good as the guys they are replacing not only playing in the game but preparing the team by "pretending" to be the next opponent.

With all the injuries at safety why didn't we move McCollum to safety you know the position he was rated three stars at is beyond me. The Oline could probably Crumbley now, Pickren is in between a rock and a hard place depth stretch at both spots seem like Ejike and Smith should've played more probably around the LSU game.

ECU had 278 yards rushing @ 6.2/carry.
Marshall had 381 @ 11.9
MTSU had 259 @ 7.6

Not exactly awe-inspiring.

RE: 5 more players out vs Rice?
UAB is ranked #106 out of 123 FBS teams in Rushing Defense and Rice is ranked #15 out of 123 teams in Rushing Offense. Combined w/ all UAB injuries, I would expect a very simple gameplan from the Owls...Run left, run right, run up-the-gut, and then when UAB puts all in-the-box..then take some shots throwing the ball for big plays....

We tried this same gameplan against La Tech and it worked really well. We also tried it against FAU and it did not work out well. We missed open receivers when FAU stacked the box and with FAU stacking the box, it slowed down the running game... I'm sure UAB coaching staff will be spending lots of time watching what FAU did.

But my personal opinion is what they did is not a really specific schemes but rather just really good athletes at LB and DB who could cover space and tackle well. UTEP tried to copy FAU and just did not have same caliber of athlete.

Maybe getting less coaching for the Rice game will be a plus.

I'm as big an optimist as anyone, and I'm so beat down I just hope it's still interesting in the 4th quarter.
