Throttled by Stony Brook
Well now we know that JMU doesn't deserve to make the playoffs this year and the wheels fell off tonight. I'm thinking hard and I can't remember a game where a Mickey Matthews defense was so bad against a poor offense. There have been some good offenses over the years that have gotten the best of Mickey's scheme, but Stony Brook has a poor offense. They came into the game ranked 8th out of 10 in CAA passing offense at 190 ypg. Their QB had completed only 56% of his passes with the same number of TD's (9) as INT's (9).
He looked like an All-American tonight against the Dukes.
This is the first game all year that JMU was favored and ended up losing and it was a punch in the neck. Stony Brook took it to the Dukes repeatedly without any luck or fluke plays in the mix. They flat out beat the Dukes with better offense and a couple of turnovers on defense.
To make this season a success, the Dukes needed to win all the games they would be favored in and pull 2 upsets.
They pulled one upset as a home dog against Villanova and would have had a meaningful game next week if they didn't tank tonight.
This one hurts a little more since it was a home game, but there were other opportunities to pull some road upsets that this team just couldn't find a way to get it done.
1-road loss to favorite Akron.
2-road loss to favorite Delaware
3-road loss to favorite W&M
4-road loss to favorite New Hampshire
The Dukes had their chances.
I think the team had enough players to cover for the growing pains of Birdsong at QB, but they didn't do it on the field and results are the only thing that matters. A defense that has been the calling card of Mickey Matthews' teams did not keep its end of the bargain.
Now that the Dukes are eliminated from the playoffs, we can get into the juicy debates of should he stay or should he go.

It was a butt whooping....by Stony Brook. Think back to 2008...did you EVER think it would come to this?
It was embarrassing on so many levels. What a waste of momentum.
BTW, I don't think Matthews will be fired.

Absolutely sucks to not make the playoffs on a consistent basis. We will have to wait minimum of another year to see if Bridgeforth can host a playoff game. The accountants running our athletic department have to be going nuts at all the potential lost revenue we have missed by not hosting a playoff game in the expanded Bridgeforth.

Was it just me, or did it look like Stony Brook was bigger, more talented than us all around? I have always felt that we had more talent and coaching is what held us back, but it looked like we were lacking in both areas tonight.

SBU was bigger across the roster. It's scary what they must have had when healthy......yea, SBU was missing a TON of starters due to injury.
