RE: Official Game Thread: Austin Peay
As I've repeatedly pointed out..............the ETSU SID office is a total embarrassment. To say it's worse than when John Cathey was here is true, and that's a pretty damning indictment. Mike White did a pretty decent job (overall) when he was in charge, considering the handcuffs he had on in some ways. Using grad students or interns to write copy is fine - IF it's adequate and accurate. It rarely is. The ultimate responsibility is on the SID to make sure that it correct.

And that anyone could object to the comment that we need better track facilities is beyond disbelief. I recently heard a story (second-hand) of one potential recruit (not T&F, but of a 'major' sport) visiting campus, and asking where the track was. How does a recruiter effectively respond to that?

You point to a podcast that the overwhelming majority of people doesn't know exists.

ETSU has yet to even post a 2 deep chart for football.

There was practically no info released to the public on the state of football before the season.

Posters on this board have repeatedly question the lack of info on ETSUs sports.

I've been to WCU, and have only observed APSU on TV. True, no track, but our facilities in football here at ETSU are excellent. Who has a complete indoor facility? If either one does, it's not posted on their athletics website and must be hidden somewhere. Basketball here is much better. APSU basically only has stands on one side (unless that's recently changed), and it's hard to convince me that a game at Ramsey or APSU is better than a game at Freedom Hall. I've brought many people to games from out of town and they're always impressed. Plus, didn't we have the best attendance numbers last season with a 12-20 men's team? Haven't we had the highest attendance of any team in the SoCon since we returned? I think we have.

The podcast gets listened to enough, apparently, to keep it going. It's not just that, though, because we have weekly coaches shows, and many other SoCon/OVC/ASun teams do not. The coaches I have talked to have told me they felt that the media coverage was here much better than our peers.

Agreed on the state of football not being discussed, outside of the podcast. I guess they wanted to avoid talking about it - I can see why now. Regardless, that doesn't excuse that.

Just because posters have questioned the lack of info on ETSU sports doesn't mean they're savvy about looking for it, without it falling in their laps. I follow ETSU athletics on facebook and I get a pretty constant feed of information. and I don't have to do anything to receive that information. So I don't agree with that, either.

Well said. We have been the victim of a disaster AD who made disaster hires, most notable in basketball and football. These things will be rectified with competent coaches. All we have left to correct is basically football now. I think Savage will bring winning back quickly and with winning, the fans. No one was critical when Forbes had the Bucs in the top 30 in the nation and when Sanders had football as a top twenty team. The comparison of the facilities of the Dome and other FCS schools is a good one. A full size indoor practice facility with state of the art weight room and athletic training facilities right off the practice field. Very few FCS teams in the south have anything like that. Savage will have the Bucs rocking in Freedom Hall and a new football coach will turn football back into winning. Go Bucs!

There's no way the public should have to hunt around to find info on ETSU sports.

As far as leading the conference in basketball attendance, not hard to do when the other schools have such poor attendance, 1500-2000 is a good crowd. Turn on espn+ for a socon game, stands look practically empty. For WBB, ETSU is probably the leader, CHATT and MERCER have decent attendance, the rest of league is terrible.

As far as indoor football facility, the Dome finally is an asset to all sports as a practice facility. As far as recruiting, haven't seen any real benefit. An athlete and his fsmily want a first class stadium, which Greene Stadium is not, NIL opportunities, a FBS conference, big games at home, conference championship game, good Thanksgiving and Christmas tournament destinations, basketball conference championship at desired vacation style destination, Bowl game opportunities, real football and basketball club room/lounge areas, club seats etc.

Anyone can see the tremendous changes that have occurred in college sports. ETSU didn't pay any attention or plan for the these changes. The results have been a mass exodus of players, coaches, firings, costly buyouts that have resulted in the 2 must important money sports, football and MBB crashing and burning to the bottom of a low-level mid major conference.

I believe in the previous post that I said I DIDN’T have to hunt for ETSU sports information. You just have to like a couple of social media pages, watch the local sports, and you know - actually pay attention.

We won the SoCon two years ago and were a seeded team in the FCS playoffs. I don’t know if the dome helped recruit Quay Holmes (finished 3rd for the Walter Payton) and Jacob Saylors (now on the scout squad for the Bengals) or Nate Adkins (now with the Denver Broncos) or Tre’Mond Shorts (started for LSU) of Alijah Huzzie (now starting with UNC). I’m guessing though that Randy Sanders probably helped make that happen, not the dome, but maybe you missed that. And I guess we need to apologize for leading the league in attendance? There are plenty of mid majors behind us in terms of basketball attendance outside the SoCon, I was just using that as a comparison because - you know - that’s our league. I know you probably hate optimism, but I tend to think men’s basketball is on the mend. These days, you can turn it around pretty fast with the transfer portal and solid recruiting. Sure, we lost a lot of guys to the portal, but the key is you fill those spots. Quarles failed miserably.

Look I’m all about moving up. I think we are actually better positioned than many to do exactly that. But, we made a huge mistake hiring Carter as AD. Things are getting fixed, and fix football and sustain it, we can get there too. However, right now, I’m happy to stay out with the fluidity amongst leagues at the FBS level. Soon enough, the P5 will split away all together, and then everyone will be repositioning.

FCS schools.

But let’s take UT Knoxville. I don’t follow any of their accounts on social media, and really the only way I get any info on them is either from Bobby Rader or local media. Local media (let’s pick on WJHL) has about as many UT stories as ETSU, or even high school sports. I get about as much ETSU as UT from there. Bobby is very UT heavy, but I wouldn’t know that if I didn’t listen. So outside of following social media, going to the website, or looking for the info myself, I wouldn’t get much more UT than I do ETSU. So maybe you and I are talking about different things here?

I just received a Buccaneer Bulletin via email covering the latest in sports. Also the athletic department has a Facebook site where there is a lot of current information plus you can watch the press conferences and coach's shows live. Plus all of the different sports have their own Facebook sites where they constantly update fans of happenings. Info is flowing all the time. With the current state of our football program there is not a lot of positive news they can post right. Jay and Keith will probably put out another podcast today or tomorrow. Plenty to keep fans up to date.

Ready to move on to Sammy! Let’s go bucks, I think we have a real shot at a SoCon win on the 30th. Right now, we are 0-0 in conference play so can turn this around and a By week to get healthy!

How bad is this ETSU team? Limestone put 45 points on C-N last week, 45-14. We are headed for a 1-10 season unless Citadel, VMI, or Wofford gifts us a victory or two.

Yes under Quarles we appear to be a mid-level D2 team. We were fortunate that CN looks worse than we thought. Those three teams will be tough for us. We might win one or two or we could lose all three. If you listened to Jay's podcast this week with Doc he answered Jay by saying all coaches are evaluated each year by how they run their programs and by wins and losses.

Quarles goes, ETSU hires a Deion Sanders, hits the transfer portal going both ways, assembles a new team, ushers in a new attitude, and rights this ship for 2024.

For the record, we have a bunch of injuries and are really a different team because of all those. If Riddell is back, Eniaj Carter, Irby, and a host of others (as expected), then this team will look way different. I’m not saying we’re headed for the playoffs, but we won’t be a mid-level D2 team either. I’m hopeful we can finish in the upper half of the SoCon this year. Maybe not, but hoping. Sanders had a season just like Quarles first season in his 2nd year, which you’d think would have been better than the first season. So strange things happen, and he’s who we’ve got right now, so I’m hoping he can turn it around when he gets these players back out there. And I know that’s optimistic.

Maybe so, not optimistic. I was looking at Citadel site and they were equally frustrated thinking they will loose out but one of their alums chimed in to say “we will at least have 1 conference win with ETSU on the schedule and maybe 2 if Wofford is off the day we play them”. We’ve garnered quite the reputation with this coach in a quick two years from what they said when Randy was here.
