UC baseball player named to Academic All-American team
CINCINNATI, Ohio---University of Cincinnati senior Jack Nelson has been chosen to the ESPN The Magazine Baseball Academic All-American third team, as voted on by CoSIDA (Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America). Nelson becomes UC's first Academic All-American this season and the first for the Bearcat baseball program since 2001.

Nelson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) excelled for the Bearcats both at the plate and on the mound this season. He ranked fourth on the team in hitting (.306) and third in RBI (47), while adding five home runs and 16 doubles. On the mound, Nelson held a 3-1 record with four saves in a team-high 24 appearances. In the classroom, Nelson has a 3.61 GPA, majoring in finance. Nelson was also honored by CoSIDA in 2003 when he was a first team all-district selection.

By being named an Academic All-American, Nelson becomes the first Bearcat baseball player to garner the honor since Craig Tewes in 2001. Tewes was a second team choice by CoSIDA that year.

This year's team was voted on by members of CoSIDA. To qualify, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2, and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.

A player from Notre Dame also made the third team.
