RE: Running backs coach Louis Ayeni
I just wanted to bring it to attention. Thought it was very odd for a coach to make a remark like this about their own team. But some people here have provided some nice explanations as to why he might have done this. I respect their opinions, still don't like him saying things like this. Oh well, he seems like a good coach and recruiter.

Let's not forget the quality work of the OL. David Fluellen gives them high praise at every opportunity.

The OSU's backfield is loaded, and for that, we should be grateful that talented guys with chips on their shoulders who want to play right away can often fall to us. We are what we are, and the OSU is what the OSU is, and when a big school misses out on a guy, I'm sure the players want them to know about that, and so do the coaches.

I think the point is that Flu and others weren't missed out on by OSU. Not everybody wants to play for behemoth football factories.

I don't know that it's a mountain out of a molehill.
I doubt there were any subliminal demeaning thoughts guiding the coach's comments by I can't for the life of me think of any good reason the words "Big Ten" should have been in his mouth while talking for UofToledo. No matter his intent, I hope he considers that what he said was a mistake and takes this as a learning experience.

easy,
Anytime anyone tells me we have a big ten, sec, etc level player committed I will be very excited. I know what the person is saying by this reference. This kid is going to tear up this league.

I can see this as reasonable, but I can get this from the scouting services. I can get this info from a message board and rave about it.
I really wouldn't want my coaches to bring it up. Perhaps it's a different flavors thing and only going off MY personal experience, if in a business meeting someone made clear they measured their success at recruiting by who they beat for the services of the recruit, that wouldn't be appreciated. Colleagues do not want to be told they are working for the second string, even if they are aware they are.
Toledo fans do not need to be told they are "lucky" because they got a recruit that could have gone somewhere "better," even if they know it's true.
JMHO: no disrespect towards yours.

I still don't understand why it is an insult to Toledo to say that they have a player who is good enough to play in the Big Ten. It is a HUGE compliment to Fluellen and it demonstrates how talented he really is. It also shows that we have some good recruiters on the coaching staff.

I see Easies point of view, but I agree with your comments.

ayeni has done agreat job coaching his rbs. the coaching all around has been pretty strong this year.
and most coaches talk like that, they just don't all get quoted on it.

In my head I'm hearing pono's mom saying "And if most of the boys jump off a bridge that means you should jump off a bridge?"

Yet everyone on this board gets excited when it is announced that UT is getting a transfer from a "Name" school.

or an un-name school. I don't think it was Weatherspoon's stop at Columbus St that made his transfer exciting to anyone here. I think it was his resume as a ballplayer.

It's about talent. Not about the Name school. Plenty of times it's a former recruit of UT's anyways.
