RE: CUSA and Memphis create options to play in basketball / agreement reached
I remember that game vs Charlotte a couple yrs ago. Joe was pouting and not playing. Someone from CHA hit a 3 at the buzzer that covered the spread and you could hear a small cheer ring out from the Memphis crowd. You then knew who the gamblers were.

I'd like to play UAB or USM in Tupelo. MTSU or WKU in Nashville would be a blast too.

To get a chance at a potentially ranked team, at a neutral location, on TV.

Plus the CUSA teams get to keep the gate...and TV proceeds.

it would be dumb of any Cusa school to pay Memphis to play at a neutral location... If Memphis wants the money they can play on the road.

Really?

Let's say USM plays Memphis at the Landers Center in Southaven...Memphis fans will pack the place...Memphis gets $122,750...USM gets the gate $160,000 (~8000 tickets at ~20 bucks a ticket)...USM also gets any TV money made.

USM would get more money, and a shot at Memphis on a Neutral court.

Donnie Tyndall has already informed us Memphis said no to any games

It was just an example...we can't play at the Landers Center anyway...we can't play at a neutral site within something like 80 miles of FedExForum...Tupelo is the closest "neutral" site we can play at. (It's that FedExForum contract)

That the one where Bradford hit the half court shot at the buzzer to win it? The last time we played I mean.

The last time Charlotte and Memphis played in CUSA was the 2005 CUSA tournament.
Ugh. Don't remind me of that wasted trip. We went up there and lost to Memphis and their home crowd on Thursday and I could not get a flight back to Charlotte until Sunday. Unless you fly FedEx the airport doesn't have much to offer. The only thing that made me feel better about the tournament was when Darius Washington, Jr had 3 FTs and just needed to hit one to go to OT, but bricked all three. Cards win by 1. Then he sat on the floor and cried about it on TV. Good times.

I think that I may have addressed this in another post somewhere in this thread, but we played Charlotte at the FEF New Years Eve 2011.

On the CUSA side it's a game that CUSA and the school owns the TV rights to -- and the game can either be a CUSA home game or a neutral site, depending on the agreement. If it turns into a home and home agreement I could actually see a big segment of the Memphis fan base being in favor of this. Our AD, Tom Bowen, seems to like the deal -- which is always a good sign.

Thanks for the info. Does the CUSA team keep the gate of a neutral site game as well? If I am reading this correctly, Memphis could potentially net $1,227,500 from the deal. Would this be in line with the Tiger's share of NCAA credits earned had they elected to stay in CUSA? IOW, is this what they would have received from CUSA over the next five years? One last question, does this mean the Tigers are not liable in the unlikely event the next tv contract reduces legacy member payouts?

I've read the article. Memphis had a lot of NCAA Tournament credits and, it seems, those forfeited NCAA credits (which cover a rolling six year period) amounted to enough to cover the CUSA exit fee and TV damages. This CUSA and Memphis basketball deal is separate from the exit fee/TV issue as I understand the article - not part of it.

WOW! Even more interesting and impressive. I guess at the very least CUSA HQ sees value in continuing relationships. It's always better not to burn bridges IMO. Thanks again for the info as we no longer subscribe to the CA.

Recently? Today, I got a note at the bottom of an unrelated email from a USM booster saying it looks like it's back on. Granted, he didn't say when and knowing what I know about working with boosters, it may or may not be true. In my experience, they know a lot about an issue if a donation is required. Otherwise, it's hit or miss.

04-cheers Hoping it's true.

Tom Bowen, the Memphis AD, was quoted in the article as saying that Memphis has rivals in CUSA that come on the schedule with this new arrangement. I do believe that Memphis has played Southern Miss more than any other school.
