And sure, they weren't SEC-caliber teams, but they weren't exactly doormats, either...

Folks can read for themselves if they like:

Click on 'Yearly results'... and see for yourself... Given what Hilyer had to work with, I think he did an amazing job.

Coach Hilyer did a great job. Would he have been interested in giving up his medical career to coach football full time? As I recall, he had a lot of real football coaching experience BEFORE UAB so he was a REAL FB COACH as well as a physician. My belief is that Coach Bartow and his administrators were more interested in a "Name Coach" than just a "good coach" which is why they tried to get one at the beginning. The first coach I recall them approaching was an assistant at UA at the time - Willie McCorvey who said "Thanks , but no thanks". Watson Brown was just one coach on their list, but he is the first one who said "Yes".

No one was all that bothered during Brown's first decade, but unrest grew after that when the records did not improve until the short Hackney - White era. When they had left and the record returned to the "same old - same old", critical remarks became more common and 2 years later, Brown was gone. Brown had failed to bring in better players than those who left and his replacement coaches (particularly Bolt) were not successful. .

Yes, I like where we are now, and I don't like it when people suggest that we drop down to FCS. I don't like quitting or giving up. But I think we should have hung around at the FCS level and built ourselves up to a great FCS program before we made the jump. But whatevs. It doesn't matter now.

And how do you know we would have built up to a great FCS program? We may have just gotten mired down there.

It's a shame your 5 year old self wasn't there to make the call when the decisions were being made. He probably would have made just as much sense as you are now.

RE: Solomon tweet
I too like playing at the D1 level and supported the decision to do so back when it was made. At the time, I did not as fully understand the deficit in infrastructure (facilities) that UAB had to surmount over the following years - a deficit it still faces as we approach the middle of this decade. The backers of UAB football in 1990 also underestimated the ferocity of hostility that would follow from the system BOT and its manifold effects upon its program over the following years. "Black Friday" was only the opening gun shot in their decades long offensive.

If UAB is to compete with its fellows in C-USA, this deficit must be erased as quickly as possible so that our teams have the benefit of a truly level playing field regardless of its venue.
