BTW, did anyone think the new rules led to a high rate of fouls? I sure didn't, and I'm guessing they ask the refs to call things pretty tightly on the new stuff so the teams get used to them early. Neither game seemed to have a high number of fouls and I was thrilled to note there were no arm bars outside the three point line.

Nope, I don't recall a single hand-check foul called. If that's a sign of things to come, then the fear about plodding, foul-infested games is unwarranted.

RE: MBB & WBB Exhibition Games on Sunday
this hillsdale team lost to Valparaso last week 69-60 after leading 34-29 at halftime. They play Indiana this week. They started a 6'11" center and had several 6'6" to 6'7" G/F types. They run an offense very similar to Wisconsin and had several good three point shooters. Not a high mid-major team, but a good DII team. Very Physical and looked like they spent alot of time in the weight room.
When Toledo started to slash to the basket they played alot better. The first half Toledo was passive on defense and they took way to many jump shots. It's hard to use your athleticism when shooting from twenty feet. Drummond missed three key free throws late in the game, but did have a nice dunk. Boothe at times had a hard time picking up the double team and passing to the open man the second half, the first half they played him straight up. Weatherspoon didn't disappoint as an athlete. Not a very good jump shooter, more of a slasher. Juice what can you say, potential first team all MAC. Rian had a good game, which a senior should. Josh Lemon hit a JUMP SHOT, and played the floor well. Matt Smith didn't play much, but hit a couple threes in the second half to spark the offense. The first half the freshmen were timid, and looked lost. Second half Lauf played well defensively, very physical. Jon-Jon shows a ton of talent, but needs to get stronger, and Garber had problems with foot work on offense and defense. Garber and Boothe both are the same height. Jon-Jon and Rian are also the same height for those whom wanted to know. Aparicio is a legit 6'5". Aubrey is 6'6" and needs a lot of PT as he's very raw still, but a good athlete. Overall, coach K has some pretty good MAC level talent.
Saw Jeff Coil at the game with I assume two of his boys. One looked about 16 and about 6'8". Does anyone know if he is a DI player? And where does he play?
First live UT game in five years, just moved back to Toledo. And very excited about both Bball teams and the direction of the football team

Coil's son plays at Ottawa Hills, a senior. Not DI. Maybe Hillsdale?

My take on height. Boothe barely 6-9. Garber 6-8. Aparicio legit 6-7 (look at the team photo). Lauf 6-4. Williams 6-2 1/2.

Everyone I know (self included) thinks Garber has a good inch on Boothe. Guess we're already all disagreeing! 03-lmfao

I think the Bump on Gabers top of his head Makes the difference. Lauf and Williams will see a lot of court time.As for Coil From OH to Hillsdale sounds like a great combo...what an education. Nice to see former players at the game. Thought I saw jay gast also.

No need for doom and gloom.
MAC West is pretty awful.
A solid DII team ought to be able to win this division.

This team isn't as good as atleast 3 of Stan Joplin's best teams.

While we're on the topic...what's the smart money saying on when Capatosto will throw her first pass? I'm betting about the third game. that lady never met a shot she didn't like. She looked to be the most improved player -maybe this year's Inma.

We need her and Recker to take shots when they are given to em.
I like the depth, physicality, and speed of this team. Shooting will be our bugaboo most likely. Can't believe we are picked 3rd in the West.... The first few tourney's we hold will give us a nice gauge where we stand nationally. Ashland is ranked the #1 DII in the nation.

Findlay Beat Wright State and lost at Dayton by less than 10. And Hillsdale is every bit as good as Findlay this year. So maybe a DII school could win the MAC West or at least compete.

I read that they were number fifteen in preseason poll. They lost the D 2 POY from last year, I believe. Still, they should have provided a little more test than they did.

A bit early yet for doomsday predictions---these are only exhibition games. But don't get discouraged because with as many new faces as there are on both the men and women's teams there are bound to be some off nights and "growing pains" until the players gain more experience playing together and the coaches figure out their optimum player rotations and combinations, so I suspect you will have plenty of future opportunities to disparage any naysayers who may emerge.

RE: MBB & WBB Exhibition Games on Sunday
I thought someone said HC started 5 seniors, if so it showed. HC played really good team basketball and you could tell they had played together for a bunch of years. Even during the national anthem, they were in this big group hug and you could tell there was some synergy. When they came out of the locker room, I thought "that is the most athletic DII team I've ever seen." None of them were strangers to the weight room and they had height. Also how many guys NAIA - DI hits their first 8, tres (#40), holy cow! We relied too much on our athletism and maybe did play down to DII opponent but realized quickly they were good, really good. It doesn't matter if we can out jump everyone in the gym, we still need to play team basketball. Once we settle into our in-season rotation and roles are defined we'll get better. Last night everyone played like they had pent-up energy from not playing and wanted to show coach K what they could do. Anyone else see Witherspoon shove Garber out to the perimiter on a D-Rotation? New guys are still learning.

(11-03-2013 03:11 PM)northcoastRocket Wrote:  Ashland clearly did not look like a national championship team, and so didn't provide the test I had hoped for. The AU assistant coaches looked shell-shocked and seemed to be sitting there shaking their heads every time they showed the Ashland bench. Rockets clearly still have some things to work on, but overall it looked encouraging. I'm not sure we missed a free throw other than 2 that Reecher missed in the first half. How impressive that was.

Inma ... just wow. She looked sooooo good. She is gonna surprise the rest of the MAC this year I think.

Ana looked ready for a breakout year. Able to bang on the inside and then step out and hit the 3 pointer. Negative was that I think she had 3 offensive fouls ... gonna need to stay in control.

Monakana looked very impressive to me. Handles the ball well, played good D ... very fast. Made some good drives to the hoop and one end-to-end rush. I think she is gonna contribute right away.

Reecher showed some promise on the inside, but is gonna need help. We are gonna need a healthy Krunch to compete with the teams that are gonna be bigger and stronger than us.

Braun showed some good offensive skills in the 2nd half. Kinda lost on D though, so that's probably gonna hold her back from contributing early on.

I expect the tough early schedule is gonna be very difficult. I hope we can steal a win or two against some of the really good teams we will face like Purdue and Drexel, but I don't expect it. It will give this young team some much needed experience though that should benefit heading into the MAC. If we can get good contributions from de Alfredo, and Krunch is healthy, I am very optimistic for a good season and a challenge for the MAC west.

A good summary of the game....all the freshmen made freshmen mistakes...but not as many as most freshmen would at this time of the season....you are right we will need them to respond as the season progresses....all bring positives to the team...many of which we didn't have last year.....

I read some remarks on here about Reecher's play....not sure that they realize that is she trying to learn one of the most demanding positions on the team...the five and one positions are the toughest to pick up....what really impressed me about her was that she was turning to her right and left as well as shooting with both hands...she isn't the fastest up down the court but has good footwork on offense...once the nervousness leaves, she will be a big part of the offense....

Another positive was that it didn't matter what combination of players were on the court....there was no change in the quickness, tempo of the game, and style of play.....coach has a lot of options to toy with as the season progresses....

Thanks for your positive attitude....hope it is contagious to others...

Go Blue

Spot on - this is one the points of emphasis Coach Cullop has been making about this them.

I liked how Coach Cullop indicated in the post-game that she has several players that can play 3, 4 or even all 5 positions and so she can switch players on offense from possession to possession to pull defenders out of their natural positions. That should be interesting to watch develop.

Also was good to hear her say that none of the injuries are season-threatening, and although all 3 might not be back for the opener, they will be back sooner rather than later.
