RE: UAB vs New Mexico tonight in Albuquerque
UAB's goal keeper fouls ( head butts a Lobo, or the like, down in the goal while the play was going downfield with 7 seconds left, gets ejected and Lobo's get a penalty kick against a redshirt freshman taking over in goal for UAB. Mano a Mano,,,, and the lobos score. SHEEEEEEEEEEIT!,,, what a stupid play by our goalie.

Blazers loose

Way to decide the game by the officials. You can't call that unless someone is bleeding!

Hopefully we face them in the CUSA or NCAA tournament with a chance for payback.

Yes you can. You could not be a moron if that's what our keeper really did.

To be honest, we have won a couple of games in the last minute because of late calls favoring us this year.

RE: UAB vs New Mexico tonight in Albuquerque
I have a feeling that that outburst was payback for the several times that our goalie got run into, knocked down, etc in defense of the net by the Lobos. Timing sucked however. It would be interesting to find out what the goalie says about why he did it

I guess we would need to actually see it. But here is how I envision it (yes, it is speculation):

The UNM player and our keepeer get face to face. The two say bad things to each other. The UNM player continues to talk while getting closer to Ville's face. Ville lowers his head and bumps him.

Is Ville wrong? Yes. So wrong that he should get a red card when the ball is 65 yards away and have a penalty kick called against him? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Now, if he knocked the UNM kid down or busted his nose, that is different. Otherwise, the UNM player was handsomely rewarded for being a jerk, and Ville was overly punished for it.

The clock should have run out, and both players or either player could have been warned or yellow carded, but the game shouldn't be decided by such a call UNLESS the offense was malicious, which we don't know because there is no film (that I know of). If it was malicious, then the right call was made.

Ever played or reffed soccer? The laws of the game state that striking is a red card offense.(striking is defined as hitting, kicking, hitting with an object(the ball, intentionally), etc.) The foul is a spot foul. If he head butted the player, the red card was well deserved, and the foul was in the box so a pk was the correct call.

I played the sport my entire life, and never retaliated in a dead ball position, because that hurt my team. I even had a guy punch me in the head and walked away from that. I've had things said to me that would make Kevin Garnett look like a Saint. The bottom line is, nothing good could have come from his actions.

I have played or coached since 1980 including more than a decade as a high school coach (including currently). I understand the law of the game. However, as with any sport, the rules are only as good as their interpreter. Since we can't see what happened, I guess we can't judge it.

I think we can agree that it is a shame when a game is not decided by play on the field. I hope Ville learned a lesson about keeping his cool. I teach that to my players constantly. I also expect refs to protect the game. Judgements about behavior can be abusive and detrimental to the sport depending on the ref. I'd like to hear from someone who saw this action by Ville.

One more point: you said striking is a red card offense and a spot foul, but surely you can imagine where a head butt could range from a true "strike with the head" to a "barely touching bump" from two trash talkers. One violates the law of the game. The other is a tick tack call by an over-zealous linesman (not even the center ref) that decided a tight game's result. You get my point?

I get yours.

Absolutely. I didn't see the play, but if it was truly a head butt, he left the referees no option. If it was a bump, I would certainly hope the referees didn't call that. I've always found that referees are a little slower to make a call with less than a minute left in the game unless it's absolutely necessary. I'm certainly hoping that's what happened here.
