Who (if any) can break into the Gang of 4 and make it a Gang of 5 or 6?
You might have to find another term other than Big 4.
Back in the day in the old ACC the Big 4 referred to Carolina, Dook, State, and Wake Forest.
The Big 4 tournament was held in Greensboro from 1971 to 1981.

With WFR I put the kid gloves on. But for you, my friend, I'll go full out ballistic. Outside the state of North Carolina...
Who gives a ???

Neil

I would say Pitt for sure and possibly Notre Dame. Its difficult for programs like FSU and Miami unless the university puts in more money to build up the facilities and the support for the programs with the fans. I wonder why Virginia has not consistently built a better basketball program but perhaps Maryland dominates the area for recruiting.

If they do, it's about to end.

If it had been up to me, we would have initiated Syracuse in 1991. You can blame that one on Jake.
But now that we have finally gotten "smart", you should learn some of the history of the club.

Oh, I understand the history. I just think you overrate it outside the state of North Carolina. As already pointed out, the Big 5 out of Philly which is also heavily local has more NATIONAL meaning/identity attached to it than the Big 4 out of North Carolina.
Cheers,
Neil

Well, he has a point about the term not being used nationally. None the less, I think that it is a part of ACC tradition, and I am all for respecting it and promoting it nationally.
Also, I really, really like the idea of UNC, Duke, SU, and UL being called the "Awesome Four...especially Syracuse"

Google "Big 4" and "Big 5" and then come back and talk. The Philly Big 5 not only shows up in media outlets outside of PA, such as ESPN, Sports Illustrated, etc, it has its own wiki entry.
Nothing any where close to that with the "Big 4". The wiki entry for them remains "Tobacco Road", which is what they are known as nationally. Let's face it, "Big 4" only comes up locally.
Cheers,
Neil

"Final Four" might be better.
Let's face it, no league has ever had as good a duo as UNC and Duke in basketball. Big East was as good or better at times because of its depth. But starting next year the ACC will have the depth plus have 4 of the Top 10 programs of all time.
Things are going to be insane three or four years down the road, once the synergy starts rippling up and down the league.
I'm hoping a resurgence of FSU and Miami does something similar in terms of football, while recognizing that the SEC depth will put the conference in the situation of having to settle for second or third best football conference most years.
It pains me to say that, being slightly more a football fan than a basketball one, but it's how I see it. Time some of the North Carolina posters realize some hard truths, just as we Orange fans will have to come to realize being successful in the ACC will be tougher than it was being successful in the Big East in all of the sports.
Cheers,
Neil
