RE: Fast Times at Florida Atlantic -- head coach and DC are gone.
I have no ax to grind on the pot issue. But it is not harmless. It deposits three times the amount of tar into bronchial passages and lungs as a cigarette. Whether marijuana tar gives rise to lung cancer the way that the residue from tobacco does is not clear. Generally speaking the known danger for pot smokers comes from the chemicals in the rolling paper and in that regard is no worse than a cigarette.

Since I tend to be more of a libertarian on most issues once the moderate risks are explained consumption should be up to the individual. I don't smoke anything. But I'm not for legislating away the rights of others to choose on this issue, or on the issue of tobacco products. I am for my right to sit in a non-smoking section in a public area.

I spent my teenage years in a county where the Baptist preachers were supplied the most money to campaign to keep the county dry by the bootleggers who were constantly afraid of legalized competition. Somehow I see tremendous parallels between keeping pot illegal and keeping counties dry. I think both moralist politicians and drug dealers are working together on this one the way bootleggers and preachers were on legalizing booze.

It is insane that pot is still illegal. I in no way approve of it and quite frankly I find smoking in any way absolutely disgusting and pointless. But others have made a point that we spend to much money trying to fight an illegal drug that is pretty much available to anyone who wants it.

I would not be opposed to us actually legalizing it under strict terms. No marijuana can be grown at home, you must be 21 to purchase it, and there should be a high (lol) charge on it.

If you want to talk about how to get this country out of its budget crisis, running on a platform to legalize drugs would be a good way to do it. We could quit spending billions of dollars every year fighting drugs, and be able to collect millions of dollars in taxes. We could also eliminate about a quarter of our prisons, if we gave retroactive amnesty to all persons in jail on drug related charges (1,388,592 arrested on drug charges so far this year), resulting in a few billion more in savings...

We would also eliminate THE major source of funding for the criminal element in our society, effectively neutering organized crime...

What's not to like about it? We'd quit spending $500 per second at the federal level (state and local governments spent approximately $25 billion), and make million in new taxes. If you really want to balance the budget...

I suspect that is true. Except, most observers were saying that FAU is getting better at football. So why drop the hammer on him now?

Yea, seems like something else may have been going on and the school was just looking for a reason to get rid of the coach. Maybe the coach also wanted to move on?

Boca is a pretty nice area. Plus, even if he Did want to "move on", I can't believe he wanted it to go down like this. I mean, the guy was escorted off-campus by law enforcement officers. That is a MAJOR black-eye of embarrassment.

FAU did nothing wrong here. There was no conspiracy to get rid of Pelini as he is a defensive coach and the defense was making great strides this season.

Sometimes people just do idiotic things and they have to pay for it. You can't have a head coach recruiting players to do the right thing and disciplining them for drug use if the man himself does drugs. If you are in a leadership role and do stupid crap like this, you get fired. This is all on Carl Pelini and FAU should be applauded for the move.

As a graduate, I am proud of them for taking quick action instead of covering it up.

I agree, if it went down the way it is being reported, then that AD just opened up an huge lawsuit against the school/state. You cannot "force" anyone to resign, anywhere, anytime.

I saw the picture and I don't care what he did(if he did smoke at all).

I am not even an FAU fan, but this was done the very wrong way.

As for being escorted off campus by police, it is a criminal investigation and he did the crime.

FAU handled it the right way. They found out about it and canned the guy immediately. Many colleges would drag their feet or even try to hide something like this.

Akron fans of all people should know plenty about drug cases when dealing with a sports program.

Which one is it? You cannot fire someone, then tell tem to sgin an Resignation letter(thats illegal in most states)

I understand that he was at the party, but if the school really thinks that he did somke, then make him take a drug test.

As far as Alex Abreau(the Zips BB player your reffering to), Got busted, and kick off team. End of story on that one.

Carl Pelini got busted. He was confronted about it. He chose to resign instead of being fired. Very often in these cases the party at fault takes the carrot with him of the reports saying "resigned" instead of "fired". It wasn't forced. He knew damn well he was gone regardless so he chose the resigned route on his own.

FAU did nothing wrong here. It is just you not understanding the situation.

I respectfully disagree,

It is not me "not understanding," but trying to find out what actually happened. If I am basing it off of the reports in the links, my question would be did the AD go to him with the cops and told him to resign. If that is the case, then there would be big time problems for the school if it went down that way.

I have no dog in this fight, I just find it suspect thw way it is being reported. 04-cheers

Yes it is you not understanding. This is a common thing that happens when a coach is going to be gone. The coach knows he is going to be fired so he just resigns in a "save face" move.

It's being reported just fine by the legit organizations. You are just not comprehending it.

Certainly looks that way. There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

Today the FAU AD is pushing back against people who wonder why smoking one joint would be grounds for firing: He's claiming (but not offering specific facts) that there were "other violations of university rules". http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...esignation

Another item that provides more grist for suspecting that Pelini was set up -- the AD is embellishing the people who came to him by calling them "whistleblowers", but declining to comment on their "relationships with him or the school." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-f...3919.story

So we're left to wonder who would be at a party with Pelini at which pot was smoked, take photos or video of Pelini and the DC smoking, and then hand those over to the AD.

FAU doesn't need to be defended. They did absolutely nothing wrong. Message boards just always have to have a few people that want to make crap up to blast random schools.

Pelini should know better with his leadership role. I am guessing most acting like this isn't a fireable offense have no management experience.

Fortune 500 companies test their execs all the time as part of their drug programs so it wouldn't be a big deal if schools did it too.....

If you are in a leadership role and do stuff like this, you deserve to be gone due to stupidity. These acts were reported to the school by multiple parties so it was checked out.

Again the people trying to paint this as FAU being wrong are just fishing. It's part of the culture of not taking responsibility for your owns actions and trying to pass the blame.

Maybe it's time to start collecting urine specimens from all coaches and A.D.'s too. Wouldn't that be a hoot!

Hey, I agree with you 100%. It just occurred to me that the coaches don't take a urinalysis and neither do the administrators. Professors are essentially state employees as well. I believe they should test them all. Why should they get a pass? While we are at it let's get Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Executive Branch too. What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. There should be no exceptions.

What's not to like about it? We'd quit spending $500 per second at the federal level (state and local governments spent approximately $25 billion), and make million in new taxes. If you really want to balance the budget...
You make a point, but do you think "organized crime" would just sit back and take it in stride if their cash cow was taken away?

I bet not. They will still wreak havoc. The idea sounded cute, though.
I wasn't talking about just marijuana though. They might as well just cut out the war on drugs altogether. Every year we spend more and more money fighting drugs, and every year more drugs enter the country, with a higher potency every year as well...

We should allow people to purchase whatever drugs they like. It's far easier to regulate something that's legal. We could also let junkies purchase sterile needles legally, which would greatly slow down the spread of the world's largest pandemic - Hepatitis B/C, resulting in a healthier world. It would also remove drug pushers from the schools, and would take away the thrill of doing something illegal from kids as well...

And if we sell these drugs next to rehab centers, those who are addicted could have an available option right next door. The countries that have done similar to what I'm discussing have seen an immediate drop in crime as a result of people having legal options. They don't need to steal to support their habits, since the price of their drug fix has been greatly reduced...

IMO it only makes sense. People are going to seek out drugs, whether they're legal or illegal. Why not allow them to do so safely? We could collect tax money from the sale, instead of spending a fortune trying to fight it...
