Germany wants our influence in their area gone anyway. They want to lead Europe and actually the whole world.

They are not doubt the economic power of Europe right now. Funny, I seem to recall bad things happening the last time that occured. Twice.

Anyway, Merkel is probably just rattling sabres to appease her citizens and talking a different story with the US behind closed doors. No doubt Germany spies on others, so this is all just international political theater.

I don't think the Germans would pay up for European security. I think the whole continent would slide into a kind of Swedish pacifism.

Its pretty amusing the French are complaining as well. They are the worst about spying on allies and industrial spying.

Oh, I didn't say it would "work" or that it's a good idea. But I do think the strong majority of the German people (& European people) have entered into a phase where they are unwilling to defend their countries from outside attacks.

I'm sure that, once it's too late, there will be a swing back in the other direction. But so what?

Could you blame her? Remember she is from East germany where the progressive government of the time had children spying on their parents!
