Maryland Hoops is going to die in the B1G. The only two selected Premium Hoops games for Maryland this season are Syracuse and Pitt. The only other schools to get that treatment are Duke and UNC. I don't see tOSU, IU and UM creating as much buzz.
I think Maryland Football will do okay as PSU, Rutgers, tOSU and Michigan will all bring big crowds...most likely more than ACC teams outside of UVA and VTech.
How do you figure Maryland Basketball will die in the Big Ten? I always say give credit where credit is due. ACC Basketball is still number 1. The Big Ten is a very close number 2. How the hell does Maryland basketball die in such a strong across the board basketball conference? Are you ever able to drop your bias?

I'll give them credit they are recruiting well but I'm not sure the east coast players are going to embrace B1G hoops...and Maryland will have no hoops rival.

Syracuse just lost all its rivals. I guess its hoops program will go down the tubes.

Early on, you are correct. They WILL be playing the likes of Indiana, Michigan State, Illinois, Ohio State, etc...I think they will find themselves playing some very good basketball games that draw quite well. New rivalries are not made in the boardroom, they are made on the court. Those rivalries will be created naturally.
Maryland could digress in basketball or they could grow and become even more. Both outcomes are possible. The unknown is what makes conference realignment so exciting.

Louisville, Pitt, Notre Dame, BC, Miami, VT plus Duke, NCSt and UNC all ACC teams we have some history with. Maryland is on an island...PSU is a rival but face it...they suck in hoops.
In fact Duke is already a sellout and UNC is very close...sellout > 35,000 tix sold Not bad for a team going down the tubes/
LOL No. Nice try though.

An island? Do you even know what that term means?
West Virginia is on an island. Maryland has Rutgers to it's East, Penn State to it's North and Ohio not far off to the West.
What you say about Syracuse is fine but seriously...are you able to keep to reality in terms of what you say about Maryland?

Actually, Hawai'i is on an island. West Virginia is merely the lonely mountain from the Hobbit...

Island was used a descriptive metaphor...yes some hyperbole but their two closest schools are not hoops programs...yes Columbus isn't super far away...I'll concede that point. I figure Maryland will become rivals versus UM/MSU and tOSU...how fast, how intense, TBD

Exactly, by the time they can get things turned around and a possible AAC invite the B1G will have more than likely already expanded to 16.
You also bring something up that really hammers home how foolish this Buffalo stuff is. The AAC isn't even considering them. 'Nuff said.
They were on both the old Big East and the AAC's shortlist... just a few spots down. The "New York Bulls" certainly have the potential to become the next Rutgers type, with the proper focus and admin. I can see it happening eventually but first they need the right leadership in place. The NY Bulls concept is certainly a solid start.

That size chart shows exactly why Rutgers and Maryland were chosen for the Big Ten. UMD was the ACC's second largest school, and Rutgers was in the top half of the Big East (and was the biggest until the directional Florida members joined).
The biggest school available to them that isn't Texas is Missouri.
As for UMD hoops, it sort of will be out there on their own. I don't envy their recruiting here on out.

I am not trying to say that Buffalo is a top candidate, but one thing to consider is that their value is higher to the Big Ten then they are to the AAC. Same with Rutgers, who had a higher value to the Big Ten, then they did to the Big East, and for that matter the ACC, SEC and even Big 12, because of the structure of the Big Ten and how they can monetize teams.
Not saying Buffalo is their top candidate, or the next in line, but just to use an example, if adding Buffalo is the final Straw that combined with Rutgers, and Penn State (as well as the rest of the Big Ten) gets the Big Ten Network basic cable clearance in NY and beyond, and allows the Big Ten to sell itself as the conference of the city and state of New York, and allows Big Ten schools to tap into New York money in terms of research and grants, then it is MORE than worthwhile financially to them to add Buffalo. And 10-15 years from now, whenever their next TV deal expires, it will be 15 years into the Big Ten, and start to erase the memory of what they used to be.
How many people remember UConn or South Florida as 1AA teams?

Buffalo is not a candidate at all. What is this value they bring? They need a decade of building and winning the MAC before they can even be considered. They need to upgrade conferences and join the AAC first.

I think before the B10 added Buffalo, they would attempt to tamper with Canada's rules and regulations regarding their level of play below the CFL and attempt to cajole Toronto into adding scholarship football. Toronto and McGill are already AAU members, and Toronto and Montreal are the 4th and 12th largest metro's in NA, excluding Mexico.

As of 2013, Dallas-Fort Worth has a population of about 6.9 million. Metro Toronto has a population of about 6.1 million.
DFW is the #4 metro area in the US-Canada (after NYC, LA, and Chicago). Toronto may be #5, but I think they're also behind Philadelphia so they're probably #6.

I think they would also try and pry Cuse away from the ACC before going after Buffalo.
