While we are on the BBQ kick I'd like to throw out Saw's in Homewood. I don't really think the food is any better than Jim N Nicks, but its a lot smaller place.
I think that is typical in a lot of cities. In Memphis, there are places that people who grew up here swear by. I tried them and failed to see what the big deal was. If you build a place up too much, expectations become too high, and disappointment follows.
Yeah, but I still like me some Gus' Chicken
I could live without the BBQ Spaghetti at Neely's, however
+1 on Gus' Chicken!

Your hotel is very close to Edgar's Bakery. That is a guaranteed good breakfast.

RE: Question for UAB fans
No one mentioned the new place where The Cabana used to be on US 280 near Logan's Roadhouse. Has anyone tried it yet?

RE: Question for UAB fans
I really need to update the guide.
My suggestions if you are a family and wanting to eat near the zoo and want a local, non-chain experience in a nice atmosphere:
BBQ at Demitri's in Homewood or Saw's in Homewood
Pizza at Davenport's Pizza Palace in Mtn Brook
Tex-Mex at Little Donkey in Homewood
FYI, I have a little one that is nearly 2 and she has eaten at all of the above... they are all child-friendly.

I understand that it may be closer to the Zoo, but that place is terrible.
If I wanted Hipster Tex-Mex, I'd make the drive to El Barrio or Rojo, two far better choices.

RE: Question for UAB fans
I'll be heading down Friday night for the game. Staying downtown at the Tutwiler. Any good bars/restaurants close to my hotel that I should check out? We're staying through Sunday so I've got 2 nights to check out Birmingham.
Already made my day when you said beer was served at the stadium.
Personal "Hello" to Memphis Blazer. From Collierville myself, but moved to and staying in Middle TN.
Hoping for a great game with no injuries!

RE: Question for UAB fans
There are lots of bars around that area of 2nd Ave. N.
Not sure about "family friendly" right in there, you might want to try at the Civic Center, they recently opened a new district of restaurants up there.

Glad someone besides me mentioned that spot, I've yet to patronize it, have heard very little about it since it opened, and sorry to admit, can't even recall the name for the district given it. I gotta do something about that, maybe after this homecoming weekend for UAB, the football team and the Women's Basketball team are playing that day, and I'm going to both of them.

RE: Question for UAB fans
Downtown, I'd check out Todd English PUB which is close to the hotel. 2nd Ave has El Barrio and Rogue Tavern which are both good. On Sunday there's a place on 20th St called Trattatoria that has a great brunch.

RE: Question for UAB fans
This is the entertainment district by the civic center: http://www.uptownbham.com/
It's less "local flavor" but it's also not just a bunch of chains either.

RE: Question for UAB fans
So far, only Todd English P.U.B. and Octance Coffee Bar & Lounge are open at Uptown, so it's not really an entertainment "district" yet.
The 2nd Ave. area has a growing selection of bars and restaurants... Pale Eddie's Pour House (bar) & Urban Standard (coffee, soup/sandwich, bakery) are also good places to check out. El Barrio is a really cool place and always packed out.

Thanks guys! Definitely don't need "family friendly" since I have no kids. Just wanting to drink, have a good time, and enjoy Birmingham.

Is there any reason you want to stay close to your hotel?
Also, who have you got with you in your crew?

RE: Question for UAB fans
The Tutwiler is on 21st street & 7th ave. north. The street is one way north and its mate is 22nd street one way south. The even numbered ave (2,4,6 north and 3rd south) are one way west and the odd numbered (3,5 north and 4th south) are one way east (3rd north has a ramp onto US 280 going south). If wishing to go to the 2nd ave downtown sites, go to 23rd or 24th streets (2 way) and go to 2nd and turn right. There is a parking lot next to The Rogue.
The new spots near the BJCC are approached by going north on 21st (Arrington) which curves east as you approach the E District.
There are several good eating spots on southside around UAB, the 5 Points South district @ 20th street and 11th Ave south and the Lakeview District at 7th Ave South and 29th street South. If you get as far south as the Lakeview district and Clairmont / University / 8th Ave south, turn left on C/U/8 and drive to 39th street and try the Silvertron Cafe on the right side.

Ah, someone earlier mentioned family friendly. You'll have a great time in the 2nd Ave. area
