Dear perimeterpost,
Here's one of those whose telling the truth conundrums. I watched the Akron game, and every time the cameras panned the visitors side of the field, there were maybe 200 fans sitting there. The one or two times the camera flashed the home side of the field it definitely was not full. So, where are the 16,000 fans that you list? Probably closer to 5,000 if that.

RE: MAC Attendance- Through Week 9
You have to keep in mind that for most schools attendance isn't measured by turnstiles at the gates but by tickets sold through the ticket office. If a school gets creative and sells large blocks of tickets to corporate sponsors, etc and those tickets aren't redeemed, or for other reasons such as bad weather, etc. then the number of people in the stands can be noticeably different.

Its not that some schools are being purposely dishonest by counting ticket sales, but I think a lot of people assume that attendance implies butts-in-seats so it can be deceiving.

Seriously, does this ever end? I think someone states this in every attendance thread ever posted here and some people still don't get it. You don't have to like it, folks but them's the rules and if Akron sold 20,000 tickets they can claim 20,000 attendance.

Dear H20ville Rocket,
Sorry to disagree with you, especially about Akron. Their team has underperformed for some time now, and to claim over 16,000 for the Ball State game and one side of the stadium is devoid of fans, some thing is fishy. And I don't like it.

T-I-C-K-E-T-S S-O-L-D is a valid measure of attendance, per the NCAA. It includes tickets bought by corporate sponsors or given out for other reasons. People need to get over this, seriously.

Dear Ken Barna,

I'm sorry but you can't disagree with a fact.

Arguing about attendance in the MAC is somewhat similar to arguing about cabin class passage on the Titanic.

Yep, it really is, T-Town. And I watched part of the game at Akron today.....the cameras just showed one side of the stands but in reality there couldn't have been more than 2,000 souls in the stands on that side.....maybe 2,200 with the band.

RE: MAC Attendance- Through Week 9
Attendance..."the act or fact of attending" according to my dictionary. So the confusion is caused by the NCAA changing the definition of attendance to whatever the heck they want it to be. Probably these numbers should be listed as tickets sold/attendance, since the number reported is some combination of tickets sold and butts in the seats... I think OU's listed attendance for today was pretty close to the number of people who showed up.

My brother was at the game in question, and I am even questioning that….

What is Akron's problem?

-Not enough population in NE Ohio (roughly 6 million)

-Not enough close by alumni within 30 minutes (roughly 100,000)

-Stadium isn't nice enough (newest in the MAC)

There is no reason why the stadium shouldn't be full every week.

I wish we had Akron's stadium. Their stadium and IPF are both the best in the conference. They have all the tools necessary to recruit.

When you're a basketball school that's won only one game per year for three years straight, people just won't show up.

Also they are still digging out of the hole that the last coach put them in.

Would have been nice if UMass could have pulled off the last second 2 point conversion and the win in front of the nice 20,000+ crowd.

Wide open receiver in the back of the end zone. We need to make that pass.

Ugh, oh well. Hopefully we get a good crowd for #17 NIU this week.

Go back to when Ohio sucked for so many years and ask yourself what Penned-In stadium looked like.

Ohio's attendance pre-Solich:

1998- 18,418 (5-6)
1999- 19,045 (5-6)
2000- 19,851 (7-4)
2001- 20,897 (1-10)
2002- 18,076 (4-8)
2003- 15,824 (2-10)
2004- 18,033 (4-7)

Attendance at Peden is somewhat insulated to the suckiness of the football team because most people are there to see the band.

Kittonhead,

I respectfully disagree, but it goes much deeper than that here. since they moved upin the 1980's, theere has been mismagmanent. From firing a popular head choach, then the other popular one leaving. To hiring friends that had no business being coaches.

The one thing that I have said about any Akron fan is that they can see strait through the BS and here is the result(at least in Football).

This is an long road back from the abyss and as I stated to you in another thread, the Sports food chain here in the area is an issue.
