History of CUSA Champions and Championship Game
In the pre-championship game era here is the number of championships won (Co-champions count as .5):
USM - 3.5
Louisville - 3
Tulane - 1
Cincinnati - .5
TCU - .5
Houston - .5
Here is the number of appearances:
UCF - 4 (Won 2)
Tulsa - 4 (Won 2)
Houston - 3 (Won 1)
ECU - 2 (Won 2)
USM - 2 (Won 1)
SMU - 1 (Won 0)
MY TAKE: Makes me feel even more sorry for USM's current situation. More than double the amount of conference championships than anyone else and been winless since beating Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl.

RE: History of CUSA Champions and Championship Game
They will be back. The pity party is getting old. Every team in this conference has been there. We went 3 and twenty something over two years. I don't think it would have felt much worse if we lost those 3 games as well.
There is no doubt in my mind that USM will be back very soon and kicking all of our butts again. I appreciate the compassion that other fans are showing theirs but a lot of those same posters take every opportunity to take shots at UAB.
Not attacking you PurpleReigns2012. I think your post illustrates their situation nicely, but it has happened to all of us who have had a little success and some of us who are still waiting on some success in this conference.

Shouldn't Cincinnati & TCU be .5 each because they both shared it with each other in '02. It kills me that ECU finished one game away from the championship so many times. At least we got those back to back chips in '08 & '09. We really need to cap it off this year to be the 1st team in championship game era to win 3.

It's also worth noting in this thread how underrated C-USA has been over the years. UL and Cincy went on to win multiple Big East Championships each. TCU was the class of the MWC, and UCF is in the driver's seat of the AAC in year one. All C-USA has ever needed was a level playing field.

And no defections.

Well in theory if there was a fair system in college football from the start there would have been less incentive for teams to leave. If there was no "AQ" the first wave of defections from C-USA would have never happened. The Big East was all but dead from a football standpoint at that point but they had the AQ status that everyone wanted.

If you look at the AAC as the legitimate successor to original CUSA, then Louisville is the only defection. We can argue about whether CUSA 1.0 was a "major conference" but the bottom line is that it's the only football-playing D1 conference that ever expelled a school. That's got to count for something.
