King and Goodwin graded best in practices to date
L. Jason Smith ‏@TheCAJasonSmith
Thru Sat's practices, Shaq Goodwin was plus-145 on Tigers' plus-minus chart (measures effort plays like rebdng). No. 2? Nick King (+141).

L. Jason Smith ‏@TheCAJasonSmith
@JamesMemphisfan Offensive/defnsve rebounding, getting to loose balls (50-50 balls), assists, deflections, turnovers, fouls drawn/committed.

King grabbed something like 16 rebounds in yesterday's practice. He's quickly becoming my favorite newcomer.

Which is exactly what we'll need ---- keep that up and I foresee starter's minutes.

If he can shoot like reported he will be what we needed from Adonis last year. All we needed Adonis to do above what he already brought to the table was grab more boards. Adonis was a decent player for us last year.

King is the newcomer I'm the most excited about. I think he'll be even better than advertised coming in.

Don't know much about King, but after seeing Shaq's early flashes of brilliance his freshman year that kind of fizzled out by season end, I'm VERY excited that he seems to have turned a page. Maybe giving up on football and focusing solely on basketball made the difference? Dunno, but he sure seems to be making the most of his time here.

I think that's true in regards to Shaq and with his apparent willingness to 'work at it.' His weigh loss alone testifies to that IMO -

What most people do not realize is that he may be the best three point shooter to ever come through the u of m. So Nick's rebounding is a plus.

That' saying a lot when Robert Sallie hit 55-117 for 47% from three point range in 08-09. I sure hope you are right.

I thought I read where Pastner told King his shooting percentage from outside was poor and that he needed to become an inside force.

Wrong, though he was on a treadmill during practice yesterday since he's actually injured. According to Grant Milner's reports, Iverson has done some good things during practice. Other times, he's looked like a freshman; just like King, Nichols, et all.

Apparently that hasn't been the case in practice.

Heard plenty about being a relentless rebounder, but not about him being the best three point shooter to come through the U of M.

Hope you are right.

RE: King and Goodwin graded best in practices to date
At an event last night, Pastner specifically mentioned (during a Q&A period) that Shaq was looking very good and King was looking the best of the freshmen so far. Also said Iverson and Nichols are going to be very good. Of course, this was after talking up the quartet of senior guards. Man, if those guards gel and are used right, that's going to be tough to stop.

He also mentioned having refs come in and call practices (I know, been mentioned already) to get the team used to the new rules...and those new rules are going to make our guards hard to deal with.

One final tidbit...he said he asks prospective assistant coaches if they like golf...if they say yes, they're supposedly out because each round is 5 hours they can't recruit!

I know, nothing earth shattering, just repeating some of his comments. At least he didn't say "Winning is hard"!
