OK. He's known for a little bit more than being a former Texas Western head coach, but he was 4-5 as our coach in 1962. I had trouble believing it myself when I was growing up.

Probably the last NFL head coach to succeed with a run-oriented offense. But even he couldn't past the AFC Championship Game (0-2 vs the Steelers)

I think that honor goes to Jimmy Johnson, His two Super Bowl teams were run oriented however it helps when you have a Hall Of Fame Quarterback keeping the defense honest!

As far as Bum goes, I do think he was one of the most underrated coaches in NFL History, when he took over the Houston Oilers they were horrible. Then he took over the Saints and made them somewhat respectable. Bum was great! God Speed Mr Phillips, Heaven has gotten a great Football Coach

RE: Former Miners coach Bum Phillips dies
One of my all-time favorite football coaches. If I were a player, he'd be the first one I'd want to have played for...He was a joy to watch on the sidelines, so down to earth and I absolutely loved his famous "last time we knocked at the door" quote. Fans and players in Houston and New Orleans adored that man, and rightfully so, a true character of the game that loved his players & they would go to war for him. Loved the Cowboy Hat he sported on the sidelines, too... My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans. If I'm recalling correctly, he was the last NFL head football coach to sport a famous nickname, and there's none that I know of to have come along since then.

He will be dearly missed. Rest In Peace and thank you, "Bum."
