RE: We apparently have a tragedy affecting EMU
Students need to stop moving to the north side of campus, across the tracks on LeForge. I used to live over there before I knew it was so hood heavy. I moved into the Eastern Highlands because it was cheap ($600/month for a two bedroom). We move in and one neighbor is a crackhead (crackhead Ron) and the other neighbors are meth heads and e-tards. We were the only students living in our building and there was only one other apartment with students in it in the entire complex. One guy was stabbed and killed in the next building over (I'm not exaggerating).

All of LeForge is like that. Shady. The southside of campus, while a bit more expensive, is much, much better where you actually get a "college experience." I don't mean to rant but I am sick and tired of kids moving over there and getting robbed or paying the ultimate price.

Tragic tragic news... Not taking away from this awful tragedy, I do have a question... Don't the football guys stay in the hotel a night before ? I am not sure if that is the case but if so why was he not in his room ? I hope this gets cleared up and the family as well as friends and the community recieves some piece of mind and justice.

This apparently happened Friday morning so he would be staying at his normal residence.

I assume players will spend tonight together.

Apparently the police aren't releasing all they know, especially the motive.

But then again that probably makes sense if they haven't arrested the suspect.

I find DirtyBird's comments about the area very interesting.

I have been out of Ypsilanti a very, very long time and never was familiar with that area where the murder occurred but it sounds like the type of area where crime and victimization is a real concern.

But I still don't expect this in Ypsilanti, near the campus. I thought the bad areas were far from campus. Guess I'm naive.

Almost 20 years ago the Catholic Priest who married me was robbed and murdered in Detroit.

Before that I was robbed at knife point by the old Olympia Stadium in Detroit by three robbers. Fortunately, someone up there must have been looking out for me. They got some money and my watch, but I was unharmed.

It is easy to say that unfortunately crime is a real problem in Detroit but Washtenaw County is a pretty safe place to live. Until today.

I just hope it wasn't robbery and a senseless murder... It is one thing to rob a person, but to murder someone too?

I lost some material possessions, but Reed lost his life...

That is right, thank you for the clarification

Yep, I was thinking the same.

Assuming it is a robbery/homicide which happened near campus, to an EMU student (/athlete) can't be good news for EMU.

RE: We apparently have a tragedy affecting EMU
It is confirmed that it was a robbery/homicide. Here is the police report from the EMU website:

And people on here say that Ypsi is a safe area... how many deaths have we had in last 5 years ? Robberies are a weekly occurance... so unfortunate

I've been thinking about this a lot today.

The fact is, I don't think I would let my son attend EMU even if he wanted to. As an alum, that depresses the hell out of me...

I was definitely wrong.

And what troubles me is that I think in August 2010 (fairly sure it was 2010) that I helped a track and field athlete from university of Maryland get a scholarship as one of those 5th year eligible graduate students (I know her parents from where I worked and recommended EMU as a good T&F school).

Her parents asked me if the area was safe and I said sure, unless one is going where they shouldn't be going (e.g., like looking for drugs).

Matter of fact, I said, I'd feel more comfortable with a student at EMU than University of Maryland.

Fortunately, she lived at The Villages. Good move by Coach Parks to get her on campus.

RE: We apparently have a tragedy affecting EMU
During my years in Ypsi I have never had a problem. BUT a lot, and I mean a lot of my friends and aquaintances did. Break ins and robberies were almost a weekly occurance. Almost every week you heard "Did you hear about so and so's house getting broken into?" What we forget is that a lot of these occurances do not get reported because a lot of students think that the chances of actually catching the person are minimal and the chances of recovering your items even smaller.

RE: We apparently have a tragedy affecting EMU
I would like to offer my condolences to you guys, the university, and more importantly the Reed family. Suddenly it seems like this game just doesn't matter anymore and instead regardless of the outcome, it should be a celebration of this young mans life. Us Bobcats experienced something similar to this when our former DT passed away from heart failure. It's not fully comparable but the loss of a young life is still a loss of a young life. It's still tough regardless of what colors you wear. I mentioned this in the Conference board but I figured I should ask this directly to the people who would most likely know. Is there anything us visiting Bobcats could do to help honor Mr. Reed? A collection or fund that would accept donations? I'm not a father yet but even now I couldn't imagine a loss so devastating as this. I would at least like to do my part in helping to keep Mr. Reeds memory alive. This Bobcat is in your corner Eagles. God Bless.

Go Eagles! and Go Bobcats!

Cheers

I use to deliver pizzas there and we told if confronted drop the pizza and run. I use to fish down by the dam and never stayed after dark just to dangerous.
