We really need a separate thread for this discussion to one get it away from the death of Demarius Reed and allow the crime question to have a fair, in-depth discussion.

Please remember that this chart is from 2010 and not 2013.. So we don't know what the new data will show..

What is it about people that makes them want to kick others when they're down? I understand the competitive nature of sports.
That's not what I'm talking about. What happened to Demarius Reed could have happened in a thousand different neighborhoods, so pouncing on Ypsilanti's and EMU's faults seems not only out of place, but especially nasty. It seems that people are using the tragedy as another opportunity to sneer.

RE: We apparently have a tragedy affecting EMU
If you think EMU is bad trying living in Chicago or the outline areas.. All city/town, yes all of them have bad area and places where you should go in the day time or nights..what happened to the Reed kid is the times that we are all living in nowadays.. The only think I wish is that all colleges had certain apartment areas that the college would sponsors and have the campus police roam it 24/7 for the college student protection and no non students could not stay there..

Also this problem is a USA problem and only will get worse if jobs and education is not being provided for.. A friend of mines told me if you want to cause a major war in the USA let them cut off the foodstamp/ Linkcard program.. It would because dog-eat-dog society here..

I totally agree with that..

My thought, similar, has been how to INCREASE CRIME:

Close an automobile factory which has hundreds of good paying jobs and watch a worker go from middle class to unemployment, food stamps, etc. etc.

Take a man's job or his wife away and you can ruin him...

I'm an EMU alum and I love Ypsilanti.

However, I want our campus/school to improve in protecting its student population. The only people I "sneer" at are the people who want to bury their heads in the sand with the notion that "it could happen anywhere".

Murder could happen anywhere, but violence against students is more common in Ypsilanti than elsewhere. It's time to do something about it.

RE: We apparently have a tragedy affecting EMU
Greetings EMU fans,

I wanted to check in and share my condolences for the tragic loss of one of your football players.

I can tell you with no hesitation I know EXACTLY how your are feeling. You see it was 4 years to the day, this past Friday, when UConn athletics lost a young soph CB named Jasper "Jazz" Howard to a senseless on campus stabbing (Dance), after he played probably the best game of his young career.

After the game he was interviewed and he said he played every play like it was the last play he would ever play. Tragically that night he was murdered.

The loss we felt as UConn diehards (like yourselves for EMU) was like no other. We lost what felt like a son, a brother, a friend and a terrific student athlete.

We blamed the dance security, we blamed the campus, other students, the non student who murdered Jazz, we just blamed everyone. Unfortunately it did nothing to bring Jazz back.

We stuck together as a fan base and talked about it for a long time. On Friday it was mentioned that it was the anniversary of Jazz's passing and then we saw your tragic loss and we felt your pain right away.

I would be shocked if your head coach has not heard from Randy Edsall, now at Maryland, as he held the team together in such a terrible time.

There is not much discussion about Jazz anymore as time tends to heal all wounds. Even Friday there was very little discussion.

So with that I offer you our thoughts and prayers. Don't fight each other. Get a hug, give a hug and prayer for Mr Reed's family as well as the players.

UConn athletics sent out a tweet on Friday sending their thoughts to EMU fans about your loss. I thought you might like to see it.

You can visit us at http://the-boneyard.com/forums/uconn-football.2/ if you just need to talk.

Here is the tweet. God Bless you all.

Thanks for the post. I remember the Jazz Howard tragedy. It's a shame such senseless things happen.

Now look at incomes! http://www.usa.com/ypsilanti-mi-income-and-careers.htm 657th out of 691! As the tea partiers like to push can't buy something if you don't have the money Ypsilanti just doesn't have the income base.
