The other night I was listening to Scully and he starts talking about one of the umpires: He tells this story about how the ump is used to a lot of squeals (from players) because he plays the trumpet (and makes some noise) himself. He fits the story in smoothly to the flow of the game.

A very nice story -- and somehow it is hard to imagine that the word "good" in this thread title is not redundant.

RE: OT-Good Vin Scully Story
Two Vin Scully stories.
One, right after I got XM radio, I was listening to the Dodger feed when the Astros were playing in LA (rather listen to Vin than Milo). Craig Biggio came to the plate. In the course of one plate appearance, Vin told me four things about Biggio that I had never heard before. And I'm an Astros fan, a SABR guy, and a huge Biggio fan. That's how well he prepares.
Other side of the coin, back around 1980 I was doing my navy reserve summer duty in Long Beach. Had Dodger game on my car radio, it was an afternoon "businessmen's special" game at Dodger Stadium. Now, the businessmen at such games tend to run heavily toward Hollywood movie moguls, and there is sort of this tradition that young aspiring starlets show up in very skimpy outfits and try to get their attention. Bottom of the sixth or so, Garvey leading off for the Dodgers, and when they come back from station break, Scully is obviously checking out this one gal who is down by the Dodger dugout, and giving us a detailed description of what she is doing. Suddenly he says, "Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen, Steve Garvey is currently trotting around the bases, he must have hit a home run that I missed while describing the scene around the Dodger dugout... but if you could only see her, you'd understand why I missed it."

Apparently Vin Scully was the model for KTRU's glorious Alternative Sports System, whose keen observers painted wonderful word pictures of Bikini Hill.
