James Turrell is opening a new skyspace at UT. Not as ambitious as the one at Rice, but UT was jealous...

I found both the placement of the Skyspace and the imposing closeups of Lynn Herbert in the video strange.

I like that the Rice project presents an interesting artistic form outside of the space in addition to inside the space. UT lacks the exterior attraction and seems wedged into the space in a manner better suited to locations with no open space at all. Granted, UT is packing buildings in tightly these days, but there is still ample open space in which to take on projects like this.

I suppose having it on a rooftop creates both the benefit and the downside of limiting access to the space.

Like the Rice installation, this UT skyspace was championed by Rice alum ('77) and Trustee, Suzanne Deal Booth. Turrell has built more than 80 skyspaces around the world, some of which can be seen on his website.
