I wholeheartedly disagree. Generally, you'll find most WKU fans have tremendous respect for the Ragin Cajuns and fans. Yes, it's game week and there's a tremendous uptick in the needling of fans, on both sides, but there's really no hatred at all. Most fans aren't even really familiar with the Southall basketball stuff. Most chuckle and needle UL fans and UL fans chuckle and needle WKU fans about Petrino, our mascot, etc. but I've found most of it is harmless poking at the bear kind of message board fodder. If there were true hatred between the two fanbases, it'd be more like the incessant WKU/MTSU antics....which are annoying, aggrevating, futile, stupid, infantile, etc.

Now, there are at least one or two fans from each of the two schools that have shown their backsides but then again, those guys show their backsides all the time, regardless of topic.

Relax guys....this is what college sports are all about.

On more than 1 occasion, this has turn into huge fights that havek broken site rules concerning personal insults and flaming. This is something we are taking seriously enough to have to make rules for tonight's game thread to keep the smack in the smack folder and honest discussion where it belongs.

The problem with that stance IMO is that WKU and Louisiana is not a friendly rivalry. While a few fans get a long that is the exception. There is genuine hatred of the two fan bases stemming from the Last time the Cajuns were dominate in MBB.

Actually WKU fans are more tolerant and understanding of personal transgressions, see Petrino , than they were when Michael Southall played the Cajuns. It is great when a fan base evolves in such a positive way. Less judgementle.

As it was prior to my time in BG, I think, what is the story with Southall? Do not answer that publicly if it is going to open a can of worms.
Just PM me with the story.
Thanks.

I don't think it will open anything any more. Southhall was a big kid, great center when he really wanted to play. He was a very smart kid, but he was fond of the weed, and was known to forget that he had classes to attend.

He had originally signed with somebody like Kentucky, but got arrested for possession while still in HS, and they pulled his offer. The Cajuns jumped on him, and he played for a while. Then he violated his probation by getting caught drinking a beer at a party, and spent some time away from school. The Cajuns took him back, and he straightened his act out and ended up graduating.

That was an outstanding team for the Cajuns, loaded with talent, but a lot of the talent had background issues of one kind or another. The folks at WKU took issue with us beating them in Diddle and dancing on the court after.

There is more, but you get the drift. No love lost between the Cajuns and the Toppers in hoops. It is NOT a friendly rivalry.

After nearly a year in jail, center Michael Southall is putting up all-conference numbers for Louisiana-Lafayette. Louisiana-Lafayette must be proud. This week's Ten for Tuesday went looking for some long-forgotten players and found them ... still playing college basketball. Who knew?

1. Michael Southall: Southall has a rap sheet you wouldn't believe, but there he is, playing for the Ragin' Cajuns. It's probably a coincidence that he has an NBA body (6-foot-10, 236 pounds) and is averaging 14 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.6 blocks. Here's his rap sheet: Arrested in May 2000 for delivery and possession of marijuana. Arrested in April 2001 for violating his bond by running away from police. (Those two mistakes cost Southall scholarships at Kentucky and Georgia Tech and landed him on three years of probation.) At ULL in 2003 Southall played well but then was suspended for academic reasons and went afoul of his probation by testing positive for alcohol and marijuana, and skipping meetings with his probation counselor. That earned him a sentence of one year in jail. ULL took him back

So we got a youngster liking the hooch or an older coach with a taste for young Bettys

I guess the issue was not so much what he did, but the number of chances he got. Funny how the better players seem to get an unlimited number of chances (and I am not just talking about UL)

Since it is a WKU home game, I am saying it will be too close to call a winner for me. It's a toss-up. Two of the best 3 teams in the SBC and should be a barn burner. Wait that's not a good term to use in Kentucky.

RE: Louisiana @ WKU Game Thread
For those wondering about the supposed thunderstorms in Bowling Green tonight, I just posted this over on the C-USA Board:

"We've gotten lucky on the weather. Currently 70 degrees and cloudy. Based on the weather map, it looks like the storms are going to miss us to the south but all the hype the last couple of days about thunderstorms at gametime will most likely have an affect on attendance as many out-of-towners probably made the decision to stay home and watch on TV. I'm hopeful the attendance doesn't look too bad on TV though."

Hoping for an injury free game and also that all out-of-towners, both Cajun and Toppers, have safe travels.

Let's roll......
