I can recall when we played exhibition games
instead of those CIA sponsored scrimmages, where if anyone dares tell what happens they are whisked away and never heard from again. Why not have one scrimmage and one exhibition game? I don't understand the thinking on this deal at all. And how successful have we been since switching to these "closed" scrimmages and eliminating exhibition games? I don't know what other programs in the Sun Belt do, but I hope they are more interested in increasing their fan base than we are, by giving their fans a way to see the kids perform before the regular season begins. Closed practices. Closed scrimmages. I guess the next step will be CLOSED GAMES! And then as some of you guys have predicted, NO GAMES

If things keep going like they have been, I don't think it will be Shields who closes the games, it will be the fans. Or I should say the "lack of fans."

The scrimmages are closed due to NCAA rules. The reason for this is that a team can scrimmage another Division I team, which they can't do in an exhibition game. Therefore, most coaches believe that they get more accomplished by scrimmaging against higher quality opposition than by playing a game that doesn't count against a non-Division I team. The reason for the NCAA rule about the scrimmages being closed is because if they were public, then it would be just like adding another game to the schedule.

While I enjoyed the exhibitions against the foreign teams and such, I understand the reasons for closing the scrimmages against other college teams. I really never cared for the maroon and silver games. It's pretty much like a pick-up game, and they don't show you much. I don't have a problem with some practices being closed on occasion. Sometimes there is a need for that. However I do have a problem with all of them being closed.

RE: I can recall when we played exhibition games
I'm still trying to get a handle on the closed scrimmages. I would think playing an exhibition game or two would give you a better idea of how your team chemistry is coming along playing a D2 or NAIA school, then playing a closed scrimmage where you are stopping play every few minutes and giving instructions. Of course there again is the control factor being employed, just like coaching while the players are playing a game. Why not play exhibitions where the kids get to play before crowds in a real invironment and then coach in practice what you see on film that they did wrong in the games?
That makes better sense to me. But they're obviously not paying me or Trojans daddy the big bucks to coach, so I guess I'll STFU.

Usually in the scrimmages they play several halves. They don't stop and give instructions. But by playing several halves against quality competition the coaches can try different combinations of lineups, defenses, etc.

I was referring to pre season exhibitions.
